and embattled souls are seeking to enlist the support of millions in their fight for a highminded cause saving the pun as a respectable form of humor Upun my soul well do it vowed the pun lovers leader George Q Lewis executive dir ector of the National Associa tion of Gagwriters Lewis said the highlight of the National Observance would be a con vention Society in New for the York of Revival the and Preservation of the Pun as a Form of Humor We punsters will take our stand sitting down Lewis said solemnly Pust like a girl who flirts with the butcher were playing for big steaks LEWIS SAID he had to admit that most people groaned and squirmed when they heard re marks like that but that deep down they really appreciate a the leadership pun good or otherwise This appreciation of the pun applies to everyone Lewis said psychiatrists girls who like to drink comedians and even Com munists who like to wash Heading for A practical joker DALLAS Tex UPI Roy Cowan is guy who likes to see the startled look on the face of a service station attendant In short Roy Cowan is a practical joker He has been working on one for quite awhile and so far it hasnt gotten him in trouble with the federal authorities He carries a stack of bills and after every fourth or fifth bill he inserts a sheet of white paper just the size of the currency When he buys gasoline he peels off a couple of the bills until he runs onto a piece of white paper Gosh he says Thats one I forgot to print So far Roy says he hasnt missed Every time he has left a victim the attendant is busily writing down his license Wednesday Hopeful for 3rd judge Iowa solons file bills WASHINGTON Wi Reps Charles B Hoeven RIowa and Neal Smith DIowa seek an ad ditional federal judgeship for their state They introduced Th u r s d a y identical bills which would au thorize the position designed to be a roving judge to work in both the present Northern and Southern Districts A third judge is needed Hoeven said in support of the proposal he has sponsored for the fourth time It is fully ap proved all along the way SMITH SAID he had received assurances from key members of the House Judiciary Commit tee that the proposal would re ceive very sympathetic consid eration I feel sure it will pass Smith said either by itself or i in an omnibus type bill for the nation as a whole The additional Iowa judgeship was included in such an omni bus bill last year which was not acted upon by the House Hoeven expressed the opinion that this bill bogged down in the last Congress because the Democratic majority may have been a little reluctant to see Republican judges appointed even though President Eisen hower had agreed to divide these new posts equally from a politi cal standpoint I would think there is a bet ter chance of having the bill en acted now Hoeven said in re ferring to the change in admin istration HOEVEN SAID court now is held in Cedar Rapids Dubuque Waterloo Sioux City Fort Dodge and Mason City in the Northern District and in Des Moines Keokuk Council Bluffs Creston Davenport and Ottum wa in the Southern District It is about 300 miles from Dubuque to Sioux City and an equal distance from Davenport to Council Bluffs in the two dis tricts He said each judge now must make at least two trips through his district each year to handle regular business plus special trips for additional sessions when the work requires It is generally recognized by those acquainted with the situ ation Hoeven said that the judges are overburdened and in need of relief and assistance The two present judges are Henry
