Retiring Auditor of Floyd County Reports Expenditures CHARLES CITY Jan S Moore who retired as county aud itor yesterday reported that the final county figures for 1832 for care of the poor paid out of the poor fund and the soldiers relief fund was 512729089 of which 59 92288 was from soldiers relief fund Never in the history of the county has there been such a drain on re lief funds Four hundred and fif teen families are being cared for at the office of the overseer of the poor and the Charles City Com munity Relief is caring for 147 families in tills city besides furnish ing Red Cross flour to about 50 other families About 4000 cords of wood has been cut and sawed by the county and community relief fund for fuel for the unemployed The county had 42 acres of gardens and the Community Relief had 18 acres be sides arranging for many indi vidual gardens The Red Cross has not only distributed flour but 1800 yards of cloth and a consign ment of clothing Including 201 dozen articles of County CHARLES CITY Jan G Henke attorney in behalf of the Commercial Trust and Savings bank First National bank of Charles City to which the First Se curity Bank and Trust company is successor and the First State bank of Rockford filed claims aggregat ing about 539000 against Floyd county asking tax refunds Notices were served on the county auditor county treasurer and board of su pervisors for a writ of mandamus at the April term of court The petition stated that banks should be assessed on no different basis than other loan agencies and claim is made that the banks of Floyd county have been discrimin ated against in the assessment of taxis for the past years Private loan institutions have been assess ed on the basis of 6 mills while the banks have been assessed of the en tire consolidated levy which has amounted to in the neighborhood of 180 or 100 mills The question was brought up some time ago by several of the Des Moines banks and the Iowa su preme court was divided four to five on the point of taxation the five holding that it had been prop erly assessed The United States supreme court sustained the minor ity opinion on the appeal Floyd County Fails to Appoint Engineer and Puts Men Off Payroll CHARLES CITY Jan one of the steps in reducing expenses to aid in balancing the budget in Floyd county the board of super visors decided not to appoint a per manent county engineer and closed the office in the courthouse This order also closed the county ma chinery building which throws sev eral additional men off the payroll County Engineer C A Beckner re ceived a salary of 165 a month Ralph Briggs his assistant 5125 and Harry LaBounty second as sistant 65 a month Auto License Reduction Shown CHARLES CITY Jan were 728 fewer automobile licenses issued on Dec 31 at the county treasurers office than on Dec 31 1931 The year closed with 2984 licenses issued since Dec 1 for the year 1933 Over 500 licenses were issued last Saturday Defaults Are Called in Floyd County Court CHARLES CITY Jan T A Beardmore opened court here Tuesday morning In the afternoon he called defaults and made an as signment of cases Next week the trial jury meets and Judge Beard more will trade terms with Judge M F Edwards at Waverly as there are some cases on the calendar in which Judge Beardmore had a for mer interest as attorney The grand jury met yesterday and was sworn in but no cases were brought for indictment Jens Grothe new coun ty attorney intends to dispense with the grand jury as much as possible the coming year in order to save expenses for the county Matters will
