storm swept across Iowa Tuesday The state highway pa trol said blizzard conditions pre vailed in some northwest areas Freezing rain snow and sleet pelted the state Temperatures dived to below zero as a cold wave blew in from the northwest The weather bureau forecast lows of 10 below zero in the north west Tuesday night Five to 10 above readings were predicted for the southeast Highways were becoming in creasingly slippery Sanding crews were busy City reported a 3 below reading at 9 a m Tuesday Low est temperature reported in the state was 7 below at Sibley and Primghar in northwest Iowa Up to 4 inches of snow hadxfal ien by early Tuesday in some northwest areas Highways there Were icy and hazardous Winds ranging from 2025 miles hour lashed parts of the state The low in Mason City Wednes day morning was 7 degrees The bureau in its 5day fore cast said it will be cold with snow Hurries Wednesday There will be a warming trend Thursday and Friday with colder and more snow indicated Prison Washington Mara gon former bootblack who late had a pass to the white house was indicted Tuesday on charges of lying to senate invest gators If convicted by a jury on th charges Maragon would be liabh to possible penalties of 40 year to 10 years on each count The date for a trial will be se later A federal grand jury accused Maragon of perjury in 1 Saying his only bank accoun m 1945 and 1946 was in the Un ion Trust company in Washington 2 Testifying that from 1945 until July 1949 he did not ne gotiate any government business and did not receive any money for negotiating government business or for any work done by him in connection with the government 3 Stating he was not employed by anyone else when he took a job with the state department on a mission to Greece 4 Saying he borrowed from his motherinlaw in 1949 The charges are all based on testimony that Maragon gave las July 28 to a senate committee The committee was looking into activ ities of men who offered for a fee
