in the past not so ancient there has been somebody on hand to flash the green light when an im proved calendar showed up But for the past quarter of a century or so the United States has been the Eussia have sensed the advantages which would flow from utilizing the World Calen dar But Uncle Sam symbol of progress has proceeded on the wholly unprogressive premise that what was good enough for our forefathers is good enough for us Several years ago in corre spondence with a member of Congress about something else I got an insight into how diffi cult it is to gain consideration for any new idea on Capitol Hill TO IMPRESS UPON ME how radical some people are in their thinking this congressman a classmate of mine in the Uni versity mentioned a suggestion which had just come to him presumably from a constituent This fellah the lawmaker wrote me actually wanted to discard our calendar in favor of some crackbrained plan My response to that letter took the form of a challenge a challenge which I have issued a dozen times in these commen taries with never a taker I dare you to spend one hour reading up on the World Calen dar and write me another letter like this one Of course I didnt hear from him again He was doubtless preoccupied with what he and I am sometimes cynical enough to believe the same of most congressmen regarded as the one most important task facing the nation namely getting him self reelected BACK IN CAESARS DAY when an obviously improved calendar came along he could pass on it and give the order for its use Thats how we came by the Julian Calendar Kennedy has stamped a top priority label on a program recommending an arsenal of weapons for attacking the problem of chronic unemployment in depression areas The program outlined by a study committee headed by Sen Paul H Douglas DI11 calls for crash basis action to provide swift relief for the needy and for longterm measures aimed at wiping out the problem At a joint news conference with Douglas Kennedy called the report of the committee he created an excellent one and added It is a problem which I think deserves the most im portant domestic priority In its unanimous report the 22member Douglas committee called for the fastest possible action to provide food funds public work and other relief for the stricken areas The committees longterm program for elimination of de pression pockets is a broadscaled blueprint for encouraging new industries into such areas or expansion of those already on the scene At the New Years Day news conference at Kennedys home Douglas singled out two recom mendations as the most impor tant One calls for nearly doub Evidence of help from outside SEATO on the alert Cold follows light snow A fresh blanket of white cov ered Iowa Monday with an current state programs enactment of legislation to provide grants to states to help finance relief pay ments to needy who cannot ob tain further unemployment com pensation benefits and a pro gram of emergency public works projects Spencer and there was not much chance of immediate moderation The snow amounted to 4 inches at Spencer and Sioux City giving a total of 8 inches on the ground at Ameficana have been taken out of Vientiane in strife torn Laos VIENTIANE Laos Iff The proAmerican government oi Premier Prince Boun Oum said Communist forces made ad vances over the weekend and seized Laos strategic plain cre ating a threat to the royal seat of Luang Probang and this ad ministrative capital In Washington the US has alerted an atomiccapable joint task force in Okinawa to move to Laos if the situation war rants President Eisenhower held a special meeting with Sec retary of State Herter Officials also indicated they are hoping to stall further trouble in Laos by calling an urgent meeting of the SEATO council The Southeast Asian de fense group is pledged to assisl Laos if requested and its hopec the meeting will make it clear to the Communists that the council is prepared to act At Bangkok Thailand Pole Sarasin secretary general o SEATO said there has been cir cumstantial evidence of grouni intervention in Laos He addec that the scale of intervention is not known IN A THREEPRONGED at tack the Beds captured the plain its airfield and the north ern provincial capital of Phong Saly the Boun government an nounced Army defenders were driven back to Xiengkhouang about 100 miles northeast of Vientiane and about the samg distance southeast of Luang bang Many Vientiane residents who could afford to do so were leav ing the city but there were no apparent signs of panic Streets were almost deserted For the first time since Dec 15 when leftist forces were driv en from Vientiane armored cars were seen rumbling through the streets INFORMATION Minister Bou avan Norasing said the rebel at tack is being supported by Red hina and North Viet Nam But ie was unable to offer proof of this and Western observers maintained reservations about lis viable traffic record Not one raffic death had been reported so far during the 78hour week end Iowas last reported traffic death came Thursday and Doosted the states 1960 death toll to 618 The state killed Sunday when he was truck by a bullet from a 22 aliber pistol which was acci entally discharged Authorities aid the Enfields were visiting t the Max Goodlander home ere when the accident occur ed CLEAR TRAIN WRECKAGE Workmen using a huge crane are shown clearing the wreckage of 42 freight cars of a Chicago and North Western train which were derailed one and one half miles east of DeWitt Sunday The cars were in the middle of a 197 and manufactured goods AP car train Cause of the derailment was not immediate ly known but the firms main line was tied up by this maze of cars which
