Steps Number 84 EDITORS is of a series of daily reports fay our editor on a trip by air around the world How people live and how they feel toward America are more em phasized by Mr Hall than scenic He was tried before Pontius Pilate Via Dolo roso where He bore His own cross and finally Calvary where He was crucified died and rose again Great as the impact has been I found myself wishing more than once that I had made myself a more profound s t u dent of the Bi ble From time to time I called to mind some of my friends for whom the e x perience would be even W EARL HALL more meaning ful than it was to me The climax of my two days in the Arabheld section of the Holy Land undoubtedly came in my last hours here when in the heart of the Holy Sepulchre atop Mt Calvary I stood at what purports to be the exact spot of the Cru cifixion and contemplated the vast significance that event in our civilization Replica of Crypt In the same sacred precincts of what was the garden and burying ground of a friend and follower of Christ Joseph of Ari mathea is a replica of the crypt in which Christ was laid and a representation of the stones rolled away by the angels On the Mount of Olives I had stood on the spot in the Chapel of the Ascension from whence 40 days after His resurrection He took final leave of His disciples I visited the Patre Noster Church on that 200foot eminence where He gave to those same disciples otir Lords Prayer In the Garden of Gethsemane the approximate place where Judas bestowed upon his Lord the Kiss of Death was pointed out to me The Garden with its All Nations church is still a place of some beauty as compared with its surroundings but the Mount has undoubtedly lost some of its original impressiveness by being denuded of its olive 14 Stations At the quarters of Pilate known as the Praetoriuin where Christ stood trial and received sentence by his accusers I stood on stones which almost certainly were trod upon by the Master during His inquisition On the trip up the winding Via Dolorosa Path of Sorrows I paused at the various marked stations there are 14 in Early in the day as we stood before the great stone in the Borne of the Rock from which Mohammed in the seventh cen tury was supposed to have made his ascent into heaven my Arab Christian guide made what seemed to me to be a profound observation He said Mohammed believed he must conquer by force Christ by love Armed Soldiers That observation kept coming back to me as I traced the Mas ters steps It came back to me even after that inspiring exper ience had been brought to a close We stepped out of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and turned into the ancient Street of David High above us on what is known as The Tower of Arab soldiers behind sandbags and with guns slung across their shoulders stood guard over the No Mans Land which separates Arabheld Jerusalem from Jewish held Jerusalem Here was proof all too convinc ing that the Gospel of Love preached by our Master has
