20 1934 f Mason City Veteran Was Decorated by King Albert Robert J Macket Member of Belgian Squadron The distinction of being decorated by King Albert of Belgium and made an honorary member of his flying squadron is held toy Robert J Macket Mason City veteran of the World war Mr Macket was recovering from an 1800 foot fall with an army plana when King Albert presented to him the bar of the Secret Order of Military Intelligence His majesty kissed the Mason City soldier on each cheek and then in both English and French ex pressed his pleasure In bestowing the honor on Mr Macket and two others The incident took place at Base hospital No 106 Base section No 12 Bordeaux France July 17 1918 Mr Macket had previously received other decorations getting the Frencli and British bars and citation stars April 3 1918 On May 1 1918 he was awarded the Belgian aeronautical Brevet They Loved Him Every soldier that ever came into contact with King Albert loved him said Mr Macket in recalling the incident The event for which Mr Macket was cited by the Belgian king oc curred June 27 1918 when he was shot down while in combat service at Luneville France He suffered fractures in both legs three broken riba and a fractured skull At that time Mr Macket was at tached with the Seventythird Royal Flying corps of the British This squadron had the distinction of bringing down more ships than any other squadron of the empire for the length of time in service The squadron was assigned to bombing an ammunition train anc was cited for having achieved a di rect hit blowing up the train and some length of track Shortly after wards enemy antiaircraft guns succeeded in making a direct hit killing his observer and bringing the plane down Asked for Service Mr Macket got attached to the British squadron when he sought to avoid prolonged service as instruc tor in a training center in France and asked to be placed with a pur uit squadron He had specialized in aerial gun nery and while in training in Eng and wrote a booklet entitled Aerial Gunnery giving the nom nclature of the Lewis machine gun ools and parts in American British and French terms The booklet was fficially adopted by the American and English forces and used exteu rlvely by the French After he was wounded Mr tlacket spent many months in the and afterwards held in tructor positions in American raining camps While he here for two years 18768 but since then has been in Wisconsin and for 30 years in Madison where he was connected with the Madison Demo crat and is still employed to the office in the accounting depart UNCERTAINTY School Directors Informed Public Works Grants Not Being Made Now A communication from p F Hop kins PWA engineer for Iowa was read by President W G C Bagley 3f the Mason City school board at he regular meeting Monday after noon at the administration building which stated In effect that applica tions for PWA grants were not at present being received It was decided however that the election set for March 12 at which a local bond issue of to be supplemented by a federal grant of will be held as scheduled In fact there was some question whether the election could be legally called off at this point There is said to be considerable basis too for the assumption that the PWA funds will be available in the early future and the authoriza tion of the local bonds contingent on receiving the federal grant of course would give Mason City a prior claim for consideration Bond Issue Contingent It should be understood Presi dent Willis Bagley pointed out that the bond issue is contingent on assistance from PWA That is stated definitely in the question to be voted on March 12 Some of the projects included in the program covered by the bond issue are of an emergeny character and will have to be financed in some other way unless applications under PWA are resumed The addition of two part time teachers to the teaching staff of the Mason City school system and the allowing of routine bills was the other major business of the session Miss Gerakllne Stenby Clear Lake will be employed three halt day periods a week at Lincoln school to relieve Miss Ellen Smith music instructor at the high school who has also been teaching at Lin coln junior high Mrs Mark Mantz Eadmar hotel will be employed at the Harding school where enroll ment has Increased this year Transportall on Refused Transportation was refused the children of Willis Rowcliffe who resides a half mile south of the Iowa State Brand creameries Streetcar transportation was requested The family before the liouso to day and asked members to submit ames for the setting up of county cnciliation commitees to iron out differences between the borrower and lender He said these commit ees were needed because no two ases were alike and there could be no hard and fast rule A state con ciliation board which will work In conjunction with the county com mittees was named last week by overnor CASE Expert Testimony Given on Injuries of Miss Studer Closing their case with expert testimony by local doctors as to the extent and permanence of injuries received by Lillian Studer in an au tomobile accident last Oct 1 Miss Studers attorneys rested the 82210 damage action against Law rence Alvin and Andrew Matzen shortly after the opening of the af ternoon session Tuesday in Judge Joseph J Clarks district court Under direct examination physi cians testified that the plaintiff had received an extensive fracture of the skull and an injury to her left eye which might prove to be verma nent However she has made a good recovery according to one expert witness statement under cross ex amination by Defense Attorney John SennefC Jr J L Dalgetty driver of the car in which Miss Studer was riding at the time of the accident and one of the first witnesses called to the stand by M E Laird and M Ma son attorneys for the plaintiff stat ed that he and Miss Studer and an othercouple were remembered none of the circum stances surrounding the accident nor anything which had happened from that time until some three or four weeks later She testified that she was not discharged from the
