Vnilea Press Lease Wires Seven Cents a Copy MASON CITY IOWA SATURDAY FEBRUARY 18 1956 This Paper Consists of Two No 114 Precinct Caucuses at Hand Voters Voice to Be Heard By DWIGHT McCORMACK DES MOINES grassroots get an opportunity to have their say as to the Republi can and Democrat presidential nominees and the parties plat forms at the forthcoming precinct caucuses A long series of caucuses and conventions begins for Republicans with the precinct meetings not later than March 2 and for Demo crats with the local caucuses March 26 The Democrats select their pres idential nominee and draft their campaign platform at a national convention opening in Chicago Aug 13 The Republicans conclude the same tasks at their national con vention beginning Aug 20 at San Francisco Higher Average 1952 there were per cent of the eligible voters of Iowa who went to the polls and cast their ballots thus exercising their constitutional rights as citizens of our great country Although Iowas percentage was above the nations average there is no reason why it could not be substantially increased by a con centrated effort at the precinct level and a stimulation of partici pation in party activities Only by participating in the po litical party of our choice do we completely fulfill our responsibili ties as citizens and thus have a voice in the selection of our public Jake More Democrat state chairman said The nine new and broadened taxes enacted by the Hoegh ad ministration has resulted in more than usual interest in the precinct caucuses The caucuses are sched uled so that one or more of the parly officers or candidates can be present at each caucus Every citizen of voting age should attend the caucus of the party of his choice It is the first step in the election of a Express Choice The caucuses give rank and file party members an opportunity to express their choices for the pres idential nominations and to pre sent resolutions which might go to the national conventions Primary business of the caucuses is to select delegates to county conventions and pass resolutions to be forwarded to the county con ventions The Republican county conven tions will be held March 16 and the Democrat county conventions April 6 The principal business of these meetings is to select dele gates to the state conventions and pass resolutions to be presented to the state conventions State convention date for the Re publican party is April C and for the Democratic party it is June 1 These conventions choose national convention delegates Republicans will send 26 dele gales to heir national convention and the Democrats will have 24 voles at Ihcir national convention although the Democrats often senf double delegations each with half a vote IRON ON WAY RIO DE Eisenhower administration of launching an insidious attack on the rural electrification program Kefauvers prepared speech at the annual meeting of the South western Minnesota Electric Cooperative opened a fourday swing through the state in search of delegate support for his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination Kefauver will move on to several speaking engagements in Iowa following his Minnesota tour He and Adlai Stevenson will be pitted in the Minnesota primary on March 20 Stevenson is due to start touring the state on March 2 Mikoyan Looses Direct Blast at Stalins Acts MOSCOW Soviet hierarchys growing campaign against the works and acts of Joseph Stalin took a dramatic turn Saturday as the Russian press and radio loosed a direct blast against the once revered leader The unprecedented attack appeared in the text of a free swinging speech by First Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan at the 20th Congress the Soviet Communist Party The speech which denounced Stalins political and economic writings by name was not printed until more than 48 hours after Mikoyan spoke This indicated party leaders gave careful thought before releasing it to the public Following the lead of the party Two Children Die From Gas Fumes Mother Overcome COUNCIL BLUFFS UP A father came home from work Fri day evening and found gas fumes had killed his two small children and made his wife critically ill Killed by the gas fumes were Kenneth Thompson 2Vi and Linda C children of Mr and Mrs Ray mond Thompson Their 32yearold mother was reported in very crit ical condition Thompson said he returned home from work to find the doors to the house locked He looked through a window and saw his wife lying on a bed and the children in their beds apparently asleep Investigators said Mrs Thomp son apparently went back to bed after seeing her husband off lo work Friday morning and was overcome by fumes Fire Chief Waldo Merrill said a vent pipe from a gas stove was closed by a damper Report 50 Dead in Plane Crash on Malta LONDON War Office an nounced Saturday that a chartered plane had crashed at Malta with all 50 persons aboard believed dead A War Office announcement said WASHINGTON W Presi dent Eisenhowers veto killed the natural gas bill for this year but his endorsement of its principles kept it a live issue for some future Congress Eisenhower based his veto Fri day on what he called arro gant and highly questionable ac tivities by some persons who worked for the bill which risk creating doubt among the Ameri can people concerning the integrity of governmental But he said there is need for legislation conforming to the basic objec tives sought in the measure The bill would have exempted producers of natural gas from di rect federal controls Sen Kerr whose
