Birmingham high school girl was shot in the foot Wednesday by a boobytrapped valentine package intended for her older sister The girl Patricia Adams was admitted to West End Hos pital where she was reported not hurt seriously Investigators first said her leg had been torn PATRICIA NANCY away above the ankle but hos pital attendants said the shot gun blast grazed the top o her left foot and broke no bones Detectives said that a valen tine note attached to a black rectangular shaped brief case was addressed to Patricias 17 yearold sister Nancy But when Nancy saw the case the officers said she remem bered a boy had told Patricia he was going to give her a de layed valentine present Instead of reading the note and seeing her name Nancy called to her sister Patricia here is your valentine Then came the stroke of luck which probably saved the girls life The detectives said the girl opened the brief case on its side the movement triggering a sawedoff shotgun Had the case been opened standing on end the blast would have ripped through the head or chest of the person opening it the officer said Members of the family were quoted as saying that Nancy a cheer leader at West End High School had received threatening letters which had been turned over to postal authorities The detectives said that at tached to the case was a neatly written valentine message which read A Valentine to Nancy On the day of Valentine Bet ter late than never anyway To the nicest girl in Wes End goes the biggest valentine around Love you There was no immediate iden tification of Jimmy The blast shattered the val online and ripped away a large part of the girls leg Police said the shotgun wa triggered by a wire leadin from the handle to screws mounted to the trigger Detectives said Patricia and Nancy were at home alone when the incident occurred Up interest rates on savings bonds WASHINGTON Johnson announced Wednesday an increase of fourtenths of 1 per cent in the interest rate on Series E and H savings bonds and make it effective as of last Dec 1 Johnson said the new rate which will apply both to bonds already outstanding and new Issues will be 415 per cent The present rate is 375 per cent The President could have raised the rate as high as 425 per cent without additional con gressional action The increase is intended not only to make savings bonds a more attractive investment WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY U Associated Press Full Lcaso Wirei VOL 104 No 7 Senate debates Viet A Manly man died about pm Tuesday in a Mason City hospital as the result of multiple injuries he suffered about 21A hours earlier in a onevehicle accident Dead is Henry Weitzel 22 an employe of Midwestern Con struction Co in Mason City While doctors said the direct cause of death was due to loss of a large amount of blood other injuries included fractured skull ribs right arm and right leg punctured lung internal in juries and severe head lacera tions The accident occurred at the Chicago North Western Rail way crossing just north of 25th North on Federal The driver of t h e truck in which Weitzel was riding Frank A LaMar Jr 33 Manly was atlmilled to Park Hospital Tues day night for a possible leg in jury and for observation A Po lice Court hearing on a charge of failure to control a vehicle has been set for Feb 21 for La Mar The other occupant of the truck John L Fistlcr 17 Manly had been riding between the two men and escaped with minor head and elbow abra sions Police continued the investi gation into the circumstances surrounding the accident until Tuesday and resumed ques tioning of witnesses on Wednes day Witnesses said LaMar started to pass a car driven north by B H Bennett 1633 N Dela ware and an unidentified semi truck just south of the Federal 25th North intersection Fistler told police that when LaMar started to pull back into the line of traffic the truck started to skid sideways After LaMar straightened the truck Fistler said it started to skid again and began to rock Police said the pavement was muddy and the truck went over the curb on the north side of the intersection The truck then continued north for about 42 feet police said crossing the railroad tracks It then struck railroad signals on the north side of the track knocking them an estimated GO feet Investigating officers said they believe the truck actually was traveling almost sideways with the front facing southwest as it crossed the tracks and struck the signal After hitting the signals po lice said Weitzel was thrown from the truck for about 48 feet What actually happened next is not completely clear police said One witness said he be lieves the truck rolled complete ly over coming back up on its wheels Another witness said the truck appeared to roll onto its right side and partly onto its top The momentum then twisted the truck around onto its wheels as it bounced back onto the pave ment headed south near whore Weitzel was lying that witness reported Fistler said he climbed out the broken windshield and La Mar got out through the door on the drivers side Material used in application of aluminum sid ing was strewn around the area from the back of the truck Fistler told police that the three had come to Mason City about am to check wheth er any siding jobs were avail able The other two men dropped Fistler off in the down town area and he actually had started to hitchhike home about 5 pm when he saw La Mars truck at Federal arid 15th North LaMar had tried to pass the Bennett car a few blocks south of Federal25th North but was unsuccessful Fisller reported
