sell selves By JOSEPH KASELOW New York HeraJd Tribune News Service NEW YORK For the last year and a half advertising agencies havebeen getting in their licks on behalf of adver tising and lets hear no snide remarks about the worm turn ing Import of the messages is this What would we do with out advertising How it aids the economy there are some bad apples in the business but youll find these in any bus iness or profession advertising by selling products makes more jobs and so forth The series which has been reprinted in as many as 20 newspapers was instituted by The Philadelphia Daily News on the theory often expounded but seldom acted upon that ad vertising can sell products but it cant sell itself Now the newspaper has pub lished a compilation of the ad vertisements called In Behalf of Advertising with a preface by Warner S Shelly president of N W Ayer Son Inc which contributed the first mes sage on Sept 23 1960 Shelly writes Let us not forget that the same advertise ments that induce people to buy also provide the dollars that enable them to buy It is esti mated that more than billion in sales are created every year by advertising sales which otherwise would not be made Take that away and you take away a bigSpart of the prosperity of the country Make no mistake about it vertising by stimulating de mand also stimulates jobs arid the factory wages and keeps wheels turning As an example of the counter attack against critics of ad vertising carried the series an advertisement prepared by Kenyon and Eckhardt Inc stands out The illustration shows the eyes and forehead of a woman with What dp they think is inside Putty The ad won top award in a contest sponsored fay Media Agencies Clients magazine The ad goes on to point out that advertising people have learned the hard way that you dont push the American con sumer around In fact thats the irony of it the ad says We who are accused have far more respect for people than our critics who profess such and eventually will be free to testify to congressional committees and appear at a news conference Kennedy opened a news confer ence with a statement on the case of Powers who Was freed by the Russians Saturday in exchange for US release of Soviet spy Rudolf Abel The President declined to say how Powers was brought down while flying a highaltitude US reconnaissance photo plane over Russia on May 1 1960 He said an anssver must await the end of questioning by appropriate gov ernment authorities In his opening statement the President said he knew there been many questions about the release of Abel and of Pow ers He said he is happy Powers is back and that he can add only that Powers is cooperating tariiy with the government in dis cussions of important information Powers will be
