Near End FORMER COUNSEL SCHWARTZ AVERS Money Passed in TV Grant Radio in Satellite Is Dead WASHINGTON WVT h e De fense Department said Wednes day signals from one of two radio transmitters in the Ameri can Explorer satellite apparently have stopped The transmitter originally ex pected to function for from two to three weeks was the more powerful of two encased in the 30pound satellite Launched in January The satellite was launched by the Army on the night of Jan 31 If the batteries have gone dead they lasted less than 12 days The Naval Research Labora tory which has charge of track ing the satellite said Wednes days Explorer passes over the minitrack system have produce no signals on the 10803 band It said signals continue to come in strong from the second trans mitter in the satellite Predic tions were that one would oper ate from two to three months 60 Miliwatts The transmitter not hear from operated with a power c 60 miliwatts or 6100 of on watt This was the signal tha was heard by amateur radio op erators and the one which sen automatic reports of how the sa ellite was faring In its trans through space The second transmitter is still operating strongly on 108 mega cycles has acknowledged receiving several thousand dollars from an attor ney for a Miami television sta tion Schwartz fired counsel for a special House subcommittee told the subcommittee under oath the money was paid to Mack after he became a member ofthe FCC in the summer of 1955 Mack was one of four commis sioners who voted to grant the hotly contested Channel 10 in Mi ami to Public Service Television Inc a subsidiary of National Air lines Several Checks Schwartz said the money was paid to Mack in several checks by Thurman A Whiteside a Flor ida attorney who had been re tained by Public Service for work in connection with its television application Schwartz described Whiteside an attorneywho has a reputation in Florida as a fixer Efforts by reporters to reach Mack and ask comment on the
