Lincoln Letters in Iowa Reveal His Political Efforts By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS You can get aglimpse ofAbraham as a working politician And if you can get access to it you also can get a line on Lincolns assassin John Wilkcs Booth at Iowa from a man who knew and helped him to escape after the President April 14 1865 Lincoln was born 145 years ago Friday And in connectionwithhis anniversary six Lincoln letters now are being publicly displayed for the first time at the historical building in Des Moincs Clyde C Walton Jr curator of rare books at thestate University of Iowa also chose the sary to announce purchase of a rare book on Booth and two other items of Lincolniana The State Department of History and Archives has 11 of the famous Presidents letters in its collection Six of these were taken out of the historical buildings vault this week for the anniversary celebra tion One of the letters fromSpring field 111 in Sept 1 1859 ex presses Lincolns confidence in James W Grimes Iowas third elected governor who served from 1854 to 1858 as a political ob server Apparently concerned about the political fortunes of the Republi can Party then only five years old Lincoln wrote to an lowan I do hope you will have no seri ous trouble in Iowa What thinks Grimes about it I have not known him to be mistaken about an elec tion in Iowa To lowan And in April I860 he wrote from Springfieldanother letter to an lowan Its interesting because it shows how even an astute poli tician can be wrong in sizing up the outlook for a convention Opinions herc as to the pros pect of congressman J F Wilson The book acquired by the Uni versity of Iowa library is J Wilkes Booth by Thomas A Jones Curator Walton said the book is far from a masterpiece But it is rare since most of the P Butler before pronouncing sentence overruled a motion by Wallaces attorneys for a new trial He informed Wallace however that he could appeal the case to the Supreme Court if he felt he had not to buy more than three billion dollars worth of guided missiles which they started procuring four years ago This is for actual procurement of missiles Jt does not include other multimiiliondollar states population as of July 11953 at 2587000 a loss of 13 per cent The net loss was put at about 11300 per year However the net loss does not show the true overall loss which is revealed when the difference be tween births and deaths reported in the state is taken into account For the past three years Iowa has had an average birth rate of 64400 and an average death rale of 26350 a difference of 38050 If no one had left the stale Iowa would havegained an average ot 38050 in population each of the last three years However the federal census shows a net loss 11300 which means an average overall loss of 49350 per cent1 The state actu ally a net gain 7000 or 8000 cachyear If its estimates arc correct the overall lost worst was about 31050 f t ;
