that the state department is employing communists manyof whom hold influential positions 5 He declined to reveal any names to newsmen but said under cer tain conditions he would give Sec retary of the Chinese defaulted on payments for them However observers said the move obviously was aimed against the Chinese communists who have laid claim to the ships The seizure apparently was in tended to City Webster City cars in the middle of a North Western freight train jumped the tracks near the depot early Saturday One car smashed into the bag gage room of the depot and ended up crosswise of the Minimum 13 At 8 a m 13 YEAR AGO Maximum 15 Minimum 2 Grand Larceny Brings 5Year Terms for 4 Four young men who admitted a series of robberies at rural schoolhouses and in small towns in the Mason City area were each sentenced to 5 years in the state rnens reformatory at Anamosa when they pleaded guilty to a charge of grand larceny in district court Saturday Judge William P Butler also sentenced 3 of Vithem to an extra year in the reformatory for break ing jail on the night of Jan 19 The 4 men are Roy Lewis 22 route 2 Henry Ackerman 22 North wood Herbert Winters 18 620J 6th Jimmy Hibner sylvania N E All but Hibner were sentenced for participating in the jail break from which they were recaptured a few hours later Lewis young brother Dale 19 is being heldin the county jail for aiding the escape by smuggling in saw blades The 4 men were arrested by the Cerro Gordo county sheriffs office on Dec 24 after a wave of rural school and small town break ins had been reported here and in Worth county Under questioning the men ad mitted 9 rural school breaks in which they obtained a number of articles later recovered at the Lewis farm home Shortly after their arrest they led deputies to a spot in Cerro Gordo county 10 miles southeast of Mason City where they had dumped a 350 pound safe stolen from a Joice implement store The men had been held in the county jail in lieu of bond each pending the trial when the Big Mo Jan 17 Cmdr George E Peckham of Cresco Iowa told a naval court of inquiry he was satisfied with the training of all hands except operations which includes navi gation and combat operations Peckham said he had discussed the matter with the Big Mos for mer skipper Capt H Page Smith not in detail with Capt W D Brown who succeeded Smith The mighty Mo was immobilized on Browns first cruise The court questioned Peckham closely about who appointed En sign E R Harris 23 as assistant navigator Adm Allen E Smith Friday questioned Harris abilities as a naval officer As I recall Peckharn said the question came up in Decem ber when the navigator was to be White the assertion that we know of no communist member in the department and if we find any they will be summarily dis charged Continues Trip McCarthy continued his trip Saturday to Reno Nev where he will address a Lincoln day ban quet Saturday night The Wisconsin senator fired his first blast Thursday night in a republican Lincoln day dinner in Wheeling W Va He waved a paper and said I have here in my hand a list of 205 that were known to the secretary of state as being mem bers of the communist party and who nevertheless are still work ing and shaping the policy of the state department Miss Senator Newsmen missed the senator as his plane stopped in Milwaukee but they found him in cars 3 miles south of Forest City Friday evening Most seriously hurt was Wil liam Johnson of Rutland who suf fered a broken back and broken peivis He is in a hospital at For If is a student at m a Northfield Minn The car in which he was riding collided with one driven by L M Holland of Belmond who was tak ing a party from that town to the basketball game at Forest City With him were his wife Mr and Mrs James Mariga and Mrs Or lan Finn all of Belmond In the car with Johnson were Leonard Jacobson of Paton Jerry Larson of Rutland Lorraine Fe yold of Badger and Eugene Helm ke of Lake Wilson Minn all St Olaf students Larson 19 is in Park hospital at Mason City where he was treated for a broken pelvis Theaccident occurred when the car containing the students going south started to pass a truck ahead of it pulled back when the Hel land car approached from the south then struck an icy spot and skidded back into the path of the northbound car officers said 17 Are Killed in Train Collision Gaillac France trains smashed headon near here Sat urday killing 17 passengers and injuring 30 others The crash occurred between Gaillac and LIslesurtarn in the foothills of the Pyrenees moun tains Rescue crews probed the wreckage for additional victims Crewman Is Sucked Out of Airliner New York crewman was sucked through the open door of a giant airliner early Saturday as the plane winged its way through darkness 8000 feet over Long Island A search was begun for his body Airline spokesman said a pow erful air draft tugged John Har ris New York 28yearold stew ard through an accidentally open door of the pressurized main pas senger compartment The plane a Pan American World Airways transocean strato cruiser was flying at about 200 miles an hour when the door flew open and Harris was swept out into space I felt a sudden gust of wind said Mrs Anna Karjicek a pas senger The steward was stand ing near the door Just like a flash the wind blew him out A long gasp or cry followed She said Other crewmen hurried into the passenger compartment to try to close the door but were unable to do so because of the powerful wind pressure Mrs Karjicek 57 of St James a Long Island N Y town Railroads dropped 50 per cent of their coalusing pasenger runs at midnight and 25 per cent of their freight traffic The number of workers idled as result of the strike by 400000 United Mine Workers was ex pected to climb sharply over the weekend as the railroads fur loughed unneeded maintenance workers 40000 Affected More than 40000 persons in cluding 33000 railroadmen al ready were affected A CIO auto workers strike against Chrysler Corp involving 125000 workers brought the total of American Workers idled directly or indirect ly by strikes to 565000 The coal lift was suggested by officials at the Chanute 111 air base Coal was so short at the base that it was being shipped in from other nearby fields and of ficials were ready to give 9000 of the 14000 airmen 3week emer gency furloughs to save fuel The nearby city of RantoulT 111 ordered a brownout of lighting to save coal at the citys light plant New Layoffs Manufacturing and steel plants were planning new layoffs as the nations coal supply dipped to its lowest level since June 1920 Warden Ralph W Alvis at the Ohio state penitentiary ordered that the prison woolen mill and automobile license tag shops be closed on Monday unless the coal crisis is solved by then A dozen steel companies have shut down furnaces laying off workers and Wheeling Steel planned to reduce operations 50 per cent and lay off 8000 workers next week TRAIN TIME DELAYED FOR 10 MINUTES HERE The Milwaukee road announces a delay for 10 minutes here in the running time of the eastbound passenger No 22 to consolidate it with another train at Madison Wis Miners Told to Go Back for 10 Days Hearing on 80Day TH Injunction Is Slated for Feb 20 Washington p resident Truman got a 10day court order to stop the coal strike Saturday and a hearing on turning it into an 80day Taft Hartley injunction was set for Feb 20 Federal Judge Richmond B Keech signed the order in a little less than an hour after a presi dential factfinding board reported to Mr Truman that a resumption of coal mining is imperative Henry Hull clerk of the court told reporters that a hearing on a preliminary injunction more last ing than the temporary restrain ing order that was issued immedi be held by Judge Should the miners refuse to abide by the order Lewis and the union may again get into contempt of court In 1946 and 1948 Lewis defied backtowork orders and paid fines points more than their opponents Claim Reds Confiscate Scrap Metal Berlin western pow ers charged the Russians Saturday with breaking the Paris agreement on Berlin transportation by con fiscating scrap metal shipments from Berlin to west Germany The charges were contained in a letter from the American Brit ish and French commandants of Berlin to the Russian commandant Maj Gen Alexander Kotikov range It was given as 60 degrees north and 139 degrees west lati tude Navy Plane Lost With 9 Aboard Corpus Christi Tex LJP A navy PBM Martin Mariner flying boat with 9 men aboard has been missing in the Gulf of Mexico and has not been heard from since 3 P m CST Friday the Corpus Christi naval air station said Sat urday Last radio contact was a position report at 3 p m which showed the 2engine craft to be 200 miles northeast of Corpus Christi or 90 miles southeast of Galveston The navy said an instructor 4 midship men and 4 crewmen were aboard The navy put 8 planes into the search Saturday and 8 more were to be added Saturday afternoon The coast guard had the cutters Ins and Boutwell in the search The coast guard also notified all ships in the gulf to be on the look out The navy said to Larson Drive Audubon The annual southwest Iowa band festival has been cancelled because of Attor ney General Robert L Larsons antigambling drive The festival usually was financed by a i a wek rejected a lastditch peace plan offered by President Truman and in so doing ranted that the miners might not work even during an injunction or might work very slowly Issuance of the restraining or der under the national emergency provisions of the TaftHartley law came just after Judge Keech had signed another order forbid ding Lrwis and the United mine Workers to maintain demands for contract provisions which the court said may be illegal The order provides for resump tion of mining as customarily scheduled That would be the normal Sday week with any slowdown or such 3day week as Lewis has been en forcing in the mines forbidden There was no immediate reac tion from the UMW on either court order A spokesman at the union headquarters said only Were waiting to hear from Mr Lewis 4 Points police radios throughout Iowa were on the alert Saturday to pick up a distress signal which was believed to come from the C54 transport plane which has been missing in Canada for 15 days with 44 per sons aboard The civil aeronautics adminis tration radio at Iowa City re ported Friday night it picked up an SOS signal and state police radios throughout Iowa were alerted The festival was attended by
