Gird for Big Blow SAIGON Indjbchina W French and Laotian dcfcnciers of Luarij Prabang braced Tuesday for an imminent attack from the Com munistlcd Vietmmh The Rebe invaders were reported within 25 miles of the royai Laotian capita on the banks of the Mekong River Laos rheumatic old King Sisa vang Vong vowed once more the city of 142000 would be defcndec until the end He made the same pledge last spring when the Viet minh invaded to within 12 miles o Luang Prabang then withdrev without a major battle This time there was every indi cation the fight would be joined The French said they had coni pletcd their major defenses a gains the onslaught From North The Vietminh invaded Laos from the north early last week sending at least a division through the jun gles and down the valleys of the Hou and Suong Rivers toward the capital As the Rebels advanced the French and Laotian forces nnd many civilians withdrew under the cover of intensive French air bom bardmentleaving rice stocks burn ing behind them in an effort to destroy food the Red fighters need Though the Vietminh were re ported officially within 25 miles of Luang Pmbang it was possible their advance troops were closer Stopped Here Officials said Monday the invad ers had been stopped at least tem porarily as they tried to force a crossing of the Suong in the area of Pak Seng 37 miles northeast of Luang Prabang and strategically located at the juncture of the Suong and the Seng Rivers Tuesday military authorities said It appeared likely the FrenchLao tian forces had abandoned Pnl Seng though there were no confir mations of this That point is a key to the Suong which empties into the Mekong a few miles north of Luang Prabang Survivors Tell of C4 7 Breaking Up ANCHORAGE Alaska is it like to be hurled into space and marooned on the snowy wastes of Alaska Six airmen who were catapulted into the air last Friday when an Air Force C47 disintegrated in flight Tuesday told of their ex perience They were among 10 Force Base They were hospitalized at the 5005th Air Force Hospital at Elmendorf after being flown o safety All six were suffering exposure shock and various cuts and bruises Here is what they told
