weathergroggy west Tuesday The new storm roared down on Washington at daybreak and was due in Montana later Tuesday Bit ter cold stung the mountainous areas The freezing breath of the cold wave and sent to the senate by vote of 77 to 28 The measure which gave the Beardsleys program its first test provides for appropriation of 000000 from the approximately state treasury surplus to establish a reserve fund for use in times when tax revenue dwindles Defeat Amendments Before passage of the bill Beardsleys forces in the house de feated 3 attempts to amend the measure as well as an effort to delay consideration of it The vote was 72 to 32 against deferring for later consideration a measure which would appropriate of the state treasury surplus of approximately 000000 for use in times when of the Iowa As sociation of School Boards Aluminum Shortage Investigation Asked Washington Hugh Butler R Nebr has introduced a resolution for an agriculture committee investigation of the aluminum shortage Butler said the aluminum short age was the ieal bottleneck to further expansion of rural electri fication He said some orders placed for aluminum wire could not be filled until 1953 J H below Nearly 30 witnesses many of them alleged victims of a so called betrothal swindle have been called for the trial of Mr and Mrs William Stanley which open ed in federal district court here Tuesday The Stanleys onetime residents of Kansas are charged specifically with transporting a cr o s s the MinnesotaIowa line the sum of allegedly stolen from Cur tiss Larson 28yearold Kasson Minn farmer Police Chief Harold Wolfe of Mason City said the couple had admitted obtaining to in a confidence game worked on bachelor and widower farmers and eligible widows in 6 Won Larson Affection Wolfe and other officials said Stanley posing as a furnace re pairman would stop at wellkept farmhouses and check the setup for possibilities When a bachelor or widower was located Stanley would brief his wife who later would make an acquaintance and obtain a loan Then she would dis appear the officials said In Larsons case federal inves tigation indicated Mrs Stanley won Larsons affection1 but said she couldnt be married until she paid off a mortgage on a beauty shop she owned Larson advanced her and Mrs Stanley disap peared The Stanleys were arrested last Nov 2 in Mason City and was found in one of Stanleys socks Wolfe said the couple told him they had spent most of the to on cars clothes and good times He said they gave their ages at 36 and told him they had 4 minor children living with their 18yearold daughter in Kansas In Separate Cars Wolfe said Stanley and his wife traveled in separate cars stayed at the same hotels but registered un der different names and used many aliases Judge Henry N Graven issued no ruling on a motion by Defense Attorney John H Mitchell of Fort Dodge former Iowa attorney gen eral to keep the evidence from the public The 2 held conference with prosecutors T E Diamond U S district attorney for the northern district of Iowa and his assistant William B Danforth before the court convened Stanley who has been out on bond paced up and down the hallway before proceedings began Mrs Stanley who has been held in federal custody was in the U S marshals office while the discussion took place She en tered the court with her husband An attractive blond she was dressed in black and caught the eye of the spectators who filled project the end of its first year Acheson said the free community of Europe has not only held its own but it has dur ing Railroad offi cials charged Tuesday that the demand of the Brotherhood oC Locomotive Engineers for a 2nd engineer in diesel locomotives was indefensible featherbedding The spokesmen for the nations carriers told a presidential fact finding board that there was no work for an additional man in the big multipleunit diesels However Clifford D OBrien counsel for the engineers said that an engineer in a diesel cab is re sponsible for what happens in the engine room but cant possibly Actress Dies at Age of 103 Years London Cresswell who claimed to be the worlds old est actress died at her home fines of imposed upon 15 mem bers of the CIO United Packing House Workers Union for viola tion of a district court order pro hibiting violence during the strike at the Decker packing plant in Mason City last April The high court dismissed fines which had been imposed on 37 other members of the union in the Decker strike In another packing house strike contempt case the supreme court sustained the conviction of Don ald Jones ol pttumwa and upheld Ms 60day jail sentence The Jones case arose out of strike at the Morrell packing plant at Ot tumwa Acts Legally In the Decker case the high court ruled that District Judge Tom Boynton had acted legally when he issued a temporary in junction against United Packing House Local 38 and all of its mem bers The officers and members of the union were convicted of contempt for violating the injunction and had appealed to the supreme court on grounds that the injunction was invalid The lower court had assessed fines totalling Convictions Convictions contempt case were dismissed The supreme courts opinion ob served that Kranz and Costello were actively in charge of the strike and were in clear and open defiance of the courts injunction restricting strikers activities The court said the 3 women vio the injunction by physical attacks on nonstriking workers that Smallridge drove a car which blocked the Decker plant entrance and that others
