Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - February 7, 1966, Mason City, Iowa Luna radio dies MOSCOW Lima 9 the Soviet moon probe used up nearly all its remaining electri cal energy with a twohour ra dio transmission of data and pictures of the moons surface Sunday night the Soviet news agency Tass announced Monday Further radio communica tions with Luna 9 will be dis continued Tass said Earlier prior to reception of the transmissions Sunday night the Russians said their moon rocket had fulfilled its mission However Tass said Luna 9 still had a certain amount of power left in excess of the rated level and an additional two hours of communications were received beginning at pm pm CST Sunday During this transmission pe riod Tass said telemetric in formation on the functioning of the probes
