ExHusband in Twin Slaying From Our Wire Service FORT Brown 49 Saturday shot his former wife and her husband to death on their farm home and called it the best days work Ive ever authorities said The victims were Mr and Mrs Clifford Anderson Webster County Sheriff Joe McMahon Fort Dodge picked up Brown about four miles away from the scene of the crime as the sheriff was to the Anderson farm home in answer to a call from the town marshal at Stratford Boone County Sheriff Steve Beaulieu of Boone joined in the in vestigation Beaulieu said Brown admitted the killings I made a promise to kill him and I never back down on my Beaulieu quoted Brown as saying Tenant House Anderson was 42 and his wife Press Hunt for Lament Bank Thug LAMONT WVA twogun bandit who herded nine persons into the vault of the Lament bank and es caped with in coins was still at large Saturday The holdup occurred just before dosing time Friday in the Lamont office of the Farmers State Sav ings Bank of Independence Bank officials said the amount of loot had not been determined but indicated it probably amounted to around The unmasked gunman chomped on an unligbted cigar as he car ried out the holdup Check Cashed Bank Manager Emil Barz and Cashier Betty Cook were alone in the bank when the bandit entered about After asking if he could cash a check he drew two pistols and announced This is a stickup No damned monkey business or Ill shoot to The bandit went behind the coun ter and ordered Barz to open the safe inside the vault He threat ened to shoot when Barz explained the safe had a time lock Miss Cook convinced the gun man that Barz was telling the truth The bandit then ordered her to place all counter cash arid cur rency in a feed sack he had with him He directed her to carry the sack of loot to the bank lobby but it was so weighted with silver that Miss Cook couldnt carry it While the holdup was in prog gress seven customers entered the bank One by one the bandit herd ed them into the vault Then he forced Barz and Miss Cook into the vault and locked the door Not Seen No one in this northeastern Iowa town of about 600 reported seeing the bandit leave town He was de scribed as about 30yearsold 6 feet tall and wearing black and white striped overalls a zipper jacket and cap with earflaps down Barz and Kenny Tennis a bank patron managed within a half hour to escape from the vault by forcing an opening over metal grill work at its rear This led into a back room and it then was pos sible to go around and open the vault door was 37 They lived in a tenant house on the farm of Mrs Andersons parents southeast of Dayton in the extreme southeastern corner of Webster County Sheriff Beaulieu said Brown sur rendered a arrested and readily ad when mitted the killings Webster County authorities kept him in custody while they investigated at the scene of the slayings He told this story Brown stayed overnight about 7 miles from the Anderson farm arose at 4 and arrived there on foot about Brown kicked on the door and Anderson appeared gun in hand Brown fired twice and Anderson fell Mrs Anderson then came to the door also armed Brown fired twice more and she fell Brown then left on foot Mean time Mrs Andersons father dis covered the Andersons Mrs And erson apparently was dead and Anderson was dying The father had to walk half a mile to reach a telephone Both Dead A physician came to the farm and both Mr and Mrs Anderson were dead A gun was lying beside each Beaulieu said Brown related that he and his wife lived in Wisconsin and had five children When they were divorced Brown gained cus tody of the children but subse quently Mrs Anderson got custody of them and brought them to Iowa Brown said he had a letter from Mrs Anderson granting him per mission to visit the children when he wished to do so The five children of Mrs Ander son were asleep upstairs in the ten ant house Mrs Andersons maiden name was Ivy Osborn Menlo Man Dies in Highway Crash MENLO UP Joseph James 33 Menlo was Communist M1G sweplwing jet fighters Saturday in the biggest air battle since the end of the Korean war in July 1953 The Air Force in a terse announcement reported the Rus sianbuilt fighters attacked a RB45 reconnaissance bomber and its covering flight of Sabres over the Yellow Sei between Korea and Red China The announcement issued by Gen Earle E Partridge Far East Air Forces commander did not identify by nationality the Red jets Presumably they were Chinese Communist There was no word on possibletacked the escorting jet fighters American injuries in the battle oriflying top on the exact location but the Air Force said no planes were lost The Air Force said the Commu nist jets attacked over interna tional waters west of Korea this The other six attackers returned to Communist presum ably Red China said the terse an nouncement The Air Force said the RB45 was on a reconnaissance mission over the Yellow Sea when the fouren gincd jet bomber was attacked by four Russianbuilt MlGl5s At the same time four other MIGs at Hunt Successor to Mendes France PARIS French Nalional Assembly Sal urday Ibrew Premier Pierre MendesFrance out of office and began a search for a less stormy leader But political observers predicted it would take a long time to find an acceptable successor Deputies toppled the fiery little Premiers Cab 20th government since the Allies drove the Germans out of Snow Covers Most of Iowa Lamoni Reports Nine Inches Bj The Associated Press Except for scattered light snow in eastern Iowa the major snow storm which moved across Iowa Friday appeared Saturday to be about over The general area of precipitation which passedthrough Iowa moved eastward more rapidly than had been expected and had almost en tirely passed east of the Mississippi pi River by Saturdays dawn the Weather Bureau said Southwest In Iowa the snowfall was heavi est in the southwest corner rang ing up to 9 inches of new snow at Lamoni for a total of 14 inches on the ground at that point Average snowfall across the state was 2 to 6 inches Skies began clearing in western Iowa Friday night and the Weath er Bureau said clearing skies were progressing eastward in Iowa Saturday morning and with them have colder temperatures in the western Roads Improving Highway conditions meantime were improving rapidly The State Highway Commission at Ames gave this report Saturday Highways covered with thin ice east and south of a line through Bedford Montezuma Waterloo Oelwein and Riceville Highways west of this line are normal ex cept for snow in towns and shel tered The heavy snowfall in the
