United States Suitable ceremonies have been planned to mark the observance of this oc casion The Boy Scout movement In America owes its Incep tion to an unknown English scout Every scout hand book relates how a Chicago publisher William D Boyce found hlmsell engulfed in a Xionaon tog back in 1905 Mr had an important business engagement ana it became Imperative to find his London address An English scout happened along and gladly guided the American bookpublisher to his destination It was not until Mr Boyco offered the lad money for his service which wan refused that the Chicago man became aware of the mission of scoullng He Inquired of the boy about English Boy Scout movement and later on his Eng lish visit made contact with Sir Robert BadenPowell When Mr Boyce returned to the states his trunk was filled irlth books and information in connection with pcouting It was largely thru his efforts that the Boy Scouts America came Into existence On the anniXersary of scouting In February hundreds of thousands of to be rededi themselves to the purposes ot scouting by repeating the oath the scout laws and the canons of the scout organization Scouting today la integral part of the boy pro Brarog ot fortythree countries The movement is not yet stendwa of clean recreation among hoys If every boy in the United States were a scout said Dr S president of the Federal Council of obey the Scout law to help other people at all times to keep myself physical ly etrons mentally awako and morally straight Scouting develops men from boys because It takes a youngster at the deterministic period of 12 years and leads him into the realm of right thinking right sports and the pursuits of manhood Scouting trains boys by example Scouts are taught to emulate the good qualities of Lindbergh Roosevelt and Commander Byrd They Learn woodcraft forestry the laws of the wilderness and the mastery of the outdoors It brings the country boy into an understanding of the city ejid gives a city boy B knowledge of woods and streams It is to boys what lodges and fraternal orders and college are to men Scout ing la not a sub roaa military training allho it teaches precision and
