Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - December 30, 1936, Mason City, Iowa TWO clewswas the impounding of a stolen automobile at Seattle The car stolen from Caii Bertocchine of Tacoma a few hours before Charles was taken from his living room was found abandoned Mon day night in King county Two gunnysacks were in a rear seat Mrs Maud Desmond told police a man and a boy got out of the machine near her home at XI p m Monday Apparently they then stole a car belonging to Allen Strickland a neighbor This ma chine was recovered in1 Tacoma later Hunt for Fingerprints The Bertocchine auto was ex amined carefully by officers seek ing fingerprints In the Seattle advertisement observers believed the name Ann might have been substi tuted for the Tim now known to have been mentioned in the ran som note left by the lone masked kidnaper in the home of Dr Matt ison Sunday night when he escaped through a window carrying Charles in his arms Department of justice agents called a truce apparently to give the Mattson family an oppor tunity to complete negotiations with the bearded kidnaper The agents working in a downtown office concentrated on inspection of a ladder used in apparent at tempts to kidnap John Franklin 5 from Haddaway hall palatial home two blocks from the Matt son residence late in November rtladc Two Attempts On two occasions Nov 23 and Nov 28 a man tried to enter the Franklin the Chevrolet Motor company assembly line here was suspended at 1 p m Wednesday because a strike in the Fisher body division plant No 2 had shut off the supply of automobile bodies Both Chevrolet currently lead ing the industry m production of automobiles and the Fisher body division are units of General Mo tors corporation Company officials emphasized the fact there was no labor trouble m the floor of a Fiftyeighth street hotel Bar bizonPlaza Tuesday was posi tively identified as Elizabeth But terfield missing Minnesota heir ess by her nurse Mrs Charlotte Parsons The identification was further confirmed by Detective John Tut tle of Greenwich Conn from near where the girl disappeared after eluding Mrs Parsons Dee 22 Mrs Parsons first made her identification from several gar ments refusing to view the body On police insistence however she later identified the body as that of her missing charge Find Note in Kooiu The dead woman had registered at the hotel last Wednesday the day re moved her gloves to read it then gone to the window and jumped At the hotel it was said Miss Butterfield rarely had left her room during her six day stay She did go out shortly before noon Tuesday No one remem bered her return Her body was seen hurtling down from the eighteenth floor by a bell boy at p m but it was some lime before hotel attaches could identify her as the occupant of room 1807
