Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - December 29, 1933, Mason City, Iowa FOUR MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE DECEMBER 29 BB 1933 REFUNDS SENT TO 93 COUNTIES Last Installment in Right of Way Bridges and Culverts Made DBS MO1NES Dec 29 Checks totaling were sent to auditors of 93 Iowa counties by Comptroller C B Murtagh in payment of the final installment of county right of way bridge and culvert refunds Ranging in amount from 23622 to thechecks are refunds to the various counties for expended by them in acquir ing right of way or in constructing bridges and culverts on the states primary roads Provided by The refunds were provided for In a law passed by the general assem bly in connection with the highway construction program A section of the law provided that where coun ties had made expenditures for right of way culverts or bridges they should receive a refund from the state primary road fund in seven annual installments Issuance of the refunds began Jan 1 1928 and the total of 82940560 paid today was the final installment Six counties received no checks to day since the law stipulated that where the county was entitled to less than the entire amount should be paid in the Mutual Gompany in 2 Counties IOWA FALLS tary Fayetta Holmes of the Farm ers Mutual Insurance company of Hardiu and Franklin counties an nounced today that the losses of his company for 1933 totaled 000 The largest loss of the year was paid to W B Brightwell of this city for the loss of a dwelling on his farm The smallest loss was for 5250 About 10 of the losses amounted from 51000 to The company has just made a two mill levy which will be used to create a reserve for future losses The company has 511000000 of insurance on its books Man Hurt at Swea City Is in Critical Condition SWEA CITY Dec Thackery who was Injured near Swea City when he was struck by a car as he was standing beside a snow plow is still in a critical con dition at an Estherville hospital Both of hla legs are broken and President of Simpson College Dies INDIANOLA Dec 29 Rev Edmund M Holmes D D who was president of Simpson college from 1889to 1892 was dead here today He had been a Methodist Episcopal minister in Iowa for 53 years Recovering at Hampton GARNER Dec and Mrs D A Smith of Garner who were Injured in an accident near Hamp bon and are now In the Lutheran hospital Hampton were reported recovering They will of Mason City Mr Forbes gave a talk telling the chil dren of a Christmas in France in 1918 when the American soldiers gave a party for French children in a little town in which ho was sta tioned Mr two remaining Civil war vet erans celebrated his ninetyfirst birthday Tuesday evening when his daughter Mrs Will Brandenburg entertained eight old friends in his honor at an oyster supper Jerry Van Riper 89 the other war vet eran was unable to attend because of the cold weather Mr Beach is quite spry for his age walking to town almost every day He was given an honorable discharge from the army
