IOWAN SAYS REAL PROGRAM HAS BEEN MADE Sees No Attempt Made to Fight Against Mellonism UTASHINGTON Dec 27 W Democratic leaders have not adopted a program said Senator Brookhart republican Iowa today which will induce him to vote with them in organizing the next senate Brookhart had offered to vote with the democrats if they would cooperate to put an end to what he called Mellonism The offer made after the elections attracted considerable interest because of the close lineup in the next senate He and other republicans or farmer la borites could give control of tht senate to thedemocrats Same to national policy FQHMERllTH IOWANS KILLED Mr and Mrs C W Sullivan Once Die in Accident Mr and Mrs C W Sullivan Chi cago were both killed in an automo bile accident about 40 miles south of Chicago Friday night Mr Sul livan was formerly of Sheffield Mr Sullivans mother Mrs Imo gene Sullivan his sister Mrs W D Biggs qnd abrother L S Sullivan all live at Clear Lake L S Sulli van and another brother C F Sul livan Des Moines left Saturday for Joliet III where tliebodies were taken after the accident The accident happened when the couple was returning from a holiday vacation with Ed Rollier St Joseph Mo Mrs Sullivans brother No details of the accident were learned Mr and Mrs Sullivan leave no children Mr Sullivan was about 63 years old He once spent six years in South America CUBA THWARTS REBELS CLAIM Rebellion Plot Attempted to Overthrow Machado Says Report Dec 27 Cuban government claimed today to have thwarted a revolutionary plot which aimed to overthrow the ad ministration Reigns Mystery feigned in the walls of the dormitory for a long time be fore the secret of the queer wiring system was discovered Irregulari ties were daily occurrences while thestudents were living found hidden in a waste basket with convenient clips to per mit instant connections and discon nections to the wires One of the lines tapped extended to the outside world Called before the officials of the school the student a sophomore whose name is withheld was un able to give a plausible explanation and was given to understand he might resign His roommate was able to con vince the authorities Sun and Wyoming Ave nue branch of the Olney bank and Trust company in the northeastern part of the city was held up today by four men and robbed of about The robbers carrying pis tols forced live patrons and five employes to line up against a wall while the cash drawers were emp tied They missed about 5100000 in the CORN SUGAR NOT I Farm Secretary Hyde Acts to Stimulate Consump tion of Product WASHINGTON Dec 27 Secretary Hyde yesterday acted to stimulate consumption of corn sugar by cancelling a requirement that its preference in canned foods be declared upon the label The agriculture department head said this removed a discrimination against the use of corn sugar which has too long been permitted He predicted it would expand the corn sugar industry without affecting the domestic cane and beet sugar producers He pointed out the restriction had been a matter of administrative regulation and not a law asserted it did not change the food drug control and would not alter rules regarding labelling injurious in gredients in food The reason for the ruling adopted 23 years ago said Hyde has dis appeared for at that time corn sugar was a muddy brown pro duct less than 50 per cent sweet while now it is 75 per cent sweet and has valuable properties not found in cane sugar CERMAK TO RUN FOR MAYORALTY Chicago Democrat Pledged to Fight Crime and 18th Amendment CHICAGO Dec 27 J ofMame DARIS Dec 27 one leg amputated because of gangrene developing in the advanced stages of arteritis Marshal Joffre victor of the Marne lay tonight between life and death and his doctors ap peared to hold little hopefor his re covery There wag an air of mystery ahout the old heros illness for his physicians declined to say where the patient was They disclosed however that the amputation was performed last Saturday and that Mme Joffre had persistently re fused to permit announcement of her husbands condition Amputation Imperative The operation took place last Sat urday at tho private
