Japanese fishing village 55 miles north of Los Angeles lies the headquarters of the na tions largest safest and new est missile range Three hundred years ago the Portuguese navigator Juan Rod rigue will be directed to the nus and beyond The Pacific missile range is the third of the national ranges and the first under the Navys management Since its inception Dec 7 1957 more than has been spent to pro vide the United States with the worlds longest test corridors over water extending thousands of miles into the vast Pacific and southward to the South Pole THE SPECIFIC mission of the PMR is to provide range support for the Department of Defense and other designated government agencies in guided missile and space vehicle re search development evaluation and training programs It com plements similar work being done at the other National ranges at White Sands N and Cape Canaveral because of the vastness of the Pacific the PMR is said to be the worlds safest missile To support the rapidly devel oping space and missile pro gram the Navy brass looked far into the future and planned for six individual ranges within the PMR complex These ranges are available to other armed services including those from certified foreign coun and Government agen cies and contractors in the field The first and smallest is the test range extending from San Nicolas Island off the South ern California coast 500 miles north near San Francisco This is for airtoair airtosurface surfacetoair and short range surfacetosurface missile de velopment The intermediate range ballistic missile range heads west to the Pacific some miles while the intercon tinental ballistic missile range extends further miles And the latter may be doubled in length when necessary A RANGE that has quite a bit of
