SHOWN BY POLL OF ITS MEMBERS Only 4 of 1 3 Remaining in Capital Plan to Oppose Bill WASHINGTON Dec 24 A check of the senates judiciary committee where the house 32 per cent beer bill faces its next test disclosed today a clear majority for modification of the Volstead act Interviews with members indU cated that the bill would receive speedy consideration unless a snarl develops over its alcoholic content provision Only 4 of the 13 committee mem bers remaining in the capital over the holidays indicated they would oppose legalization of beer at this session The other nine constituting a majority of the group said they would vote for beer though one or two made reservations on the al coholic content Three of the ab sentees are democrats whose par ty platform calls for immediate modification Next Action Monday Since the senate decided yester day to let the beer bill take its reg ular course through committees the next action will come in the ju diciary committee possibly next Monday Chairman Norris has called a meeting for that day but with the senate in Christmas recess until Tuesday a quorum may not be present and consideration would go over until after January 1 But prompt action then has been prom to send the beer consifierfrig pro hibition repeal legislation The check showed this subcom mittee headed by Senator Blaino R is overwhelmingly for beer Only one member Borah Ida ho republican is definitely opposed Wash for Beer The other members are Walsh D Dill D and Hebert R R Walsh said he is for some kind of a beer bill though he did not want to commit himself to any specific measure without further study Chairman Blaine said that if be were unable to get a favorable re port from the subcommittee he would ask for action without recom mendation so that the measure could be brought quickly back to the sen ate No one has asked for hearings he said Four Are Opposed The check of the full committee showed that in addition to Borah Senators Robinson R Ind Hast ings R and King D probably will oppose the beer bill though both Hastings and King said they were inclined rather than definitely determined to such opposition Chairman Norris ant Senators Schall R Austin R Vt Ashurst D and Black D indicated they would vote for beer but Austin said his vote would depend entirely upon what the com mittee determines as constituting an intoxicating Heart Disease After Shopping Trip SHANGHAI China Dec 24 J Col Richard S Hooker com mander of the fourth regiment of the United States marines station ed in the Shanghai international settlement dropped dead today of heart failure Lieut Col E P Moses who re cently arrived from the San Diego marine base assumed command of the marine regiment Colonel Hooker collapsed in the drawing room of his residence while playing with his children soon after returning home from a Christmas shopping tour Arrangements Not Made Funeral arrangements had not yet been made Lieut Col Moses said it would be several clays be fore the plans would be known Colonel Hooker was one of the most popular American officers who ever came to China Hig death plunged the regiment into mourn ing in the midst of elaborate Christmas celebrations all of which were cancelled Colonel Hooker came to China in October 1930 from the marine barracks at Bremerton Wash Dur ing the SinoJapanese hostilities in February in President Hoover and his party bound on a 10 day fishing cruise arrived in Savannah at a m today to be given an enthusiastic reception The chief executive and Mrs Hoover boarded the U S Sequoia and shortly afterwards headed down the Savannah river toward Ossabaw sound accompanied by three coast guard patrol boats the lighthouse tender Kilkenny and the yacht Miramer The president hoped to be fishing in Ossabaw sound for fresh and salt water bass within three hours after leaving Savannah The journey from Washington was uneventful Arriving in Savan nah the party was met by a crowd that fund In Place of Charity Ball This Christmas cheer effort takes the place of the annual charity ball which has been given each winter for 37 years At its last meeting the commandery members voted their support of the fund and Jay 1C Decker was appointed chairman of a committee to solicit and others Since then committees of the commandery have been at work making their final reports Satur day WASHINGTON Dec 24 The largest vote in the nations his tory was cast in the November presidential With this record were established three others Franklin D Roosevelt received the highest popular and electoral votes ever giyeri a win ning candidate and President Hoover polled the largest popular vote ever cast for a loser Heres the way the votes were distributed Roosevelt 22813786 Hoover 15750266 Others 1161299 Final returns as certified by state officials and compiled by the Associated Press today showed the total vote when compared with the previous record of 36798669 in 1928 to have increased 2935682 or 70 per cent Is Near Estimate The 1932 total was only 186094 less than the Associated Press esti mate of the vote based on registra tion figures prior to the election Roosevelts plurality was 7054 520 This exceeds Hoovers plurality of 6423612 over Alfred E Smith four years ago but fell short of the record plurality of 7338513 polled by Calvin Coolidge over oJhn W Davis in 1924 Roosevelts total was more than the votes for all candidates com bined in any election preceding 1920 The previous high for a win ningcandidate was Hoovers 21 429109 four years ago Was Previous nounced a years jubilee obser vance of the nineteenth centenary of Christs passion death and resur rection to begin April 2 1933 The pope replied to greetings from the score of cardinals of the curia representingcardinals and bishops throughout tlu world who were gathered in the consistory hall Following an ancient custom the pope enumerated his joys and sor rows of the past year Listed among joys were the spread of missions Catholic action and success and the cucharistic congress Sud Conditions Among his sorrows listed were the very sad conditions in Rus sia Mexico and Spain The pope sent best Christmas wishes and prayers for peace tranqullity mutual confidence friendly relations greater assist ance wherever were the greatest needs sufficient remunerative work and less unfavorable and un certain general conditions of life This was expressed particularly at a moment when he said there were so many divisions and con flicts among peoples and states not excluding the horrors of war and painful and for this reason they are the most needy and deserving of help of social justice and of Christian charity he said Announcing the holy year the pope said this dutiful and benefi cent second time in 12 years The inauguration late this after noon before a joint session of con gress was to be followed by a state procession toMoneda Palace the presidential residence for a recep tion this evening The new president was elected Oct 30 by an overwhelming major ity over four other candidates for a full six year term to succeed the republics last constitutional presi dent Juan E Montero whose ad ministration was overthrown by a socialistmilitary revolt June 4 and who was elected for a similar term a year ago Senor Alessandri ac tually is the sixth president of Chile in seven Colnmn DAVENPORT JURY CONVICTS LUGE Finds Him Guilty of Second Degree Murder in Death of Collicott DAVENPORT Dec 24 jury in Scott county district court returned a verdict of guilty of sec ond degree murder against Norman A Luco of Plattsviile Wis for the slaying of Ethel Collicott used car dealer here eight years ago The jury consisting of nine men and three women had deliberated sinco noon Friday Tho verdict was read at 3 a m Collicott was murdered the night of March 18 1924 Several weeks of investigation brought no clews un til a coat and gun found near Colll cott3 garagewere linked to Luce The latter had been a business as sociateof Collicotts in Dubuquc and Cedar Rapids A nationwide search for the sus pect was started but he escaped police nets until last August when he was arrested in Los Angeles He was found with R companion in a parked automobile and unable to answer the detectives questions satisfactorily was taken to police headquarters where investigation showed he
