International Do many of the classic chil drens books give your young ster a dangerous and distorted picture of other people in the world Yes says Dean Lester Asheim of Chicago Universitys gradu ate library school with the backing of some educators Nonsense says another group of librarians educators and authors Asheim cited two old time fa vorites Little Black Sambo and Hans Brinker of the Silver Skates as examples of books that give the kiddies a false dis torted picture of other countries He said Mary Maples Dodges book on Hans Brinker gave a stereotyped and unrealistic pic ture of the Dutch people that show them in a false light It ill prepares children to come to an understanding of other people he said Little Black Sambo has even more dubious value If the child takes the book as a picture of the African people he could grow up with dangerous preconcep tions MRS FRANCIS Sayers UCLA library school instructor and for 11 years head of the juvenile section of the New York Public Library said Asheims criticism was utterly ridiculous First of all she said Sambo was about India not Africa It is a lovely story of family rela tions every word is perfectly placed and it is truly a great work What we adults do is read the current hysteria into the great works Herbert Gold prizewinning author of The Man Who Was Not With It said it is not important if the book gives the true facts about how Hans Brinker lives in Holland but bow a boy might feel The geography of a chil drens book is the geography of a childs mind not of a place Donald J Winslow English professor at Boston University said Asheims view is more or less nonsensical Some people today give too much attention to the sociological aspects of fairy tales I trust the educational system can cope with any mis conceptions that might be given JEAN MERRILL chief chil drens librarian at Kansas City Public Library said she did not see any danger in such books although she has pulled copies of Little Black Sambo from the shelves of her library But the children who love it most are the Negro children she said J Lon Tinkle professor of comparative literature at South ern Methodist University and book critic for the Dallas Morn ing News said the idea that first impressions gained from childrens books last a lifetime are absurd Children realize that such books are part of a game he said Author Katherine Anne Por ter Washington DC support ed Asheim in charging that Little Black Sambo was trash but she saw no great need to protect a childs read ing interests Dont take them to be such fools she said They have a marvelous capacity to absorb what they want and throw off what they dont DR VIOLA Theman profes sor of education at Northwestern University said she agreed with Asheim 100 per cent She indi cated she would not let children read such books today To show how outdated Hans Brink er is I visited Holland last sum mer and it was a struggle to find three windmills Mrs Charles Arbuthnot pro fessor emeritus of childrens literature at Western Reserve University said Asheims stand was perfectly sound Such stereotyped stories as Sambo do give a false impres sion to children she said They give the Negro child a sense of inferiority and the white child a false picture OLD HOTEL BURNS ROCHESTER pre dawn fire swept through an un occupied hotel here Wednesday The interior of the old Damon
