that President Eisenhow er during his trip is indeed getting a lot of mileage out of a lot of mileage has been Mos cows reaction or rather lack of reaction For although the Communist parties in the lands traveled by Eisenhower have plainly been ordered to play it cautious and sometimes even cozy Moscow itself has shown signs of worry about the stunning impact of Eisenhower on the crowds in such places as New Delhi This has all implications of how very unneutral are the hearts of Asians he has encountered MOSCOWS WORRY it re flected in the fact that the SoT viet press has given only the briefest barest account of his Asian itinerary No Soviet citi zen as yet knows anything what of the frenzy homage and hope with which he has been greeted Instead minimal accounts buried on the inside pages of the Moscow press con fine themselves to the communi ques the arrivals and depar tures Ironically even the Commu nist Chinese have told their people more about the Presi dents odyssey than has been made known to the Russians It is true that while the Russians have been correct but cursory the Communist Chinese have been harsh and denunciatory But in the very process of their excited denunciations they have had to give the Presidents trip more publicity throughout Red China than it has been afforded in Soviet Russia The fact that Moscow in any event feels that its own pres tige is inversely affected by the Eisenhower personal triumph was also underlined by the speed of rumors here that Sov iet President Klementi Vorosh ilov the aging Bolshevik who sometimes tends to Russias ceremonial errands might can eel his own forthcoming trip to New Delhi scheduled for Jan 21 Would the Russians diplo mats asked themselves want to risk the inevitable comparisons between receptions accorded Voroshilov and Eisenhower THE VERY FACT that stand French told by President PARIS President Eisenhower Saturday urged French President Charles de Gaulle to give ground in his opposition to integrating Frances military forces with those of its Western allies This was confirmed by authoritative sources after Eisenhower and De Gaulle met for 55 minutes following the opening session oi a threeday Western summit meeting Eisenhower was reported to have supported Secretary of State Christian A Herter Herter earlier this week told the 15 nation NATO alliance ministerial meeting that an integrated European defense system TOYS FOR TOTS Members of the Mason City lo ment Duwayne Sieble secretarytreasurer cal union of the United Packinghouse Workers of of the Union Building and James Robinson America load toys for 350 children of union members on strike in CedarRapids They are left to right M Douglas McMannes president Dale Reckner depart chief plant steward Pat Gillis right is helping with the loading of the truck Truckload of toys dispatched this question is being asked in itself represents an interesting change of attitude For until President Eisenhow er reached New Delhi it had been fashionable in s d m e of Washingtons sophisticated dip lomatic circles to criticize the odyssey on the grounds that creating a climate of good will doesnt solve This is of course a variation of t h e theme that locomotion is no sub stitute for policy But in the case of Asia and particularly India this criticism was spurious Of course a climate of good will doesnt in itself solve any thing But a climate of bad will doesnt solve anything either and there is certainly no doubt in Washington now that the pro Ike demonstrations in New Delhi increased the feeling of solidarity and friendship be tween the governments and peo ples of India and the United States BECAUSE OF HER troubles with Red China India has been tending to accept the American thesis of strength through vig ilance and preparedness Ob servers here feel that the Eis enhower visit aided this tenden cy and made it more palatable for India to reverse its previous turn the other cheek attitude But as the last stages of Eis enhowers journey were setto begin Washingtons satisfac tions over the Asian part of the trip were more than balanced by worries over the rips and tears in the picture that greeted the President when he reached Paris for the Western summit For all through Europe and all through NATO the dominant sound these days is the unmis takable patter of dragging feet And the question is whether Europe is beginning to forget the lesson Asia is just learning that strength is a principal in gredient in keeping coexistence peaceful for children of strikers More than worth of toys from Mason City are going to ae distributed Sunday afternoon to 350 children of packinghouse workers on strike in Cedar Rapids The shipment from Local 38 of the United Packinghouse Workers of America will
