odds some newspapers print on baseball games It all depends of course on which survey you read but the essential differ ence between this year and last seems to be in confidence At this time last year mer chants were not predicting but asserting that they would set an alltime record for Christmas so they did Now the same gentlemen are saying that theyll probably set another record this year but only by just barely topping the 1959 total it may take a lastminute sales rush to do that At least thats the way the concensus reads BUSINESS WEEK after eon ducting its own poll reported almost unanimous feeling around the country that it has been too nice a fall for consum ers to get excited about Christ mas Nevertheless late No vembers colder weather gave hope of a Christmaspickup that It was the first crash in this country of a pure jet carrying passengers The other plane a Trans World Airlines Constellation carrying 42 raked over the Mil er Field section of Staten Is and and came to rest in har or water It also started fires in the area but they were ly controlled The crash came about 10 am with a heavy snow fogging the air UNITED AND TWA planes previously were involved in tha worst crash in commercial avi ation history when two of their planes collided over the Grand lanyon on June 30 1956 killing 128 persons The TWA plane flight 226 jound in from Dayton and Co umbus Ohio and groping for a landing at La Guardia Airport The United Air Lines flight 826 out of Chicago was headed through the murk for Idlewild ield The fields are about 10 miles apart Idlewild near the south side of Long Island in Queens and La Guardia near the North Shore Normally two planes ap the two fields would ie separated by being assigned o different altitudes and by iassing given points on the ap
