leader for organizing workers of the nations biggest industries into labor unions With the country on its eco nomic knees in the great de pression Lewis capitalized on the National Recovery Act and the Wagner Labor Relations Act passed during former President Franklin D Roose velts New Deal This established the rights unions to organize and obli gation of employers to bargain with them on wages and work ing condiitons Lewis formed the CIO and drew millions of workers into union member ship A man of iron will Lewis fought the captains of indus try and on many occasions the government itself in unrelent ing battle to obtain bargaining rights and wagebenefits for workers in one industry after another In the past decade although still vigorous and willing to fight if need be Lewis con dueled his union affairs in peace with the polilicians and his old and favorite foes tha coal mine operators Labor situation tense freedom it and want to work for are probably a good deal higher for
