your letter to the Mason City GlobeGazette Information Bureau Frederic J Ilnskln Director Washington D C HOW TARIFF HELPS THE Minneapolis Tribune points out the fact that in 1927 Minnesota farmers received for butter fat which was the greatest of all their crops in the aggregate cash value The Increase over the previous year was twelve million dollars and the average price re ceived was cents Continuing the Tribune says llero was a crop that sold for a higher pries per unit in the face of a market Increase in production Here was a crop tlmt put twelve million mare real dollars into the pockets of Minnesota fanners than hud been realized from the same source the previous year in the face of the fact that butter is produced in Denmark ut a coat Of 13 cents under production costs in Minnesota and in New Zealand at a cost 24 to 28 cents under nnd in the face of the fact that the water freight rate from New Zealand to New York is less than the rail freight rates from some points iu Minnesota to New The Tribune asks what made this gain possible and answers the questioncorrectly by stating that it was the protective tariff Under the Underwood tariff milk and cream were on the free list while butter had a tariff ol but two and a half cents a pound Compare prices which the former receives for hia dairy products now with the price received in Underwood tariff days and It is easy to see how the protective tariff can help the farmer And it Is not only the farmer of Minnesota who Is helped Farmers all over the country are getting fat checks for milk cream and butterfat and they are getting these checks because the tariff keeps out cheap foreign com petitive products To the dairy farmers ILB tariff beneficiaries can be added the sugar beet growers of the west and those who produce eheep and beef cattle Then we must not forget the cftnuBrpwer of south and hta southern neighbor fancy garden truck northern market Neither of these live without tariff protection and the vegetable grower says he must have even more pro tectlon Doubtless he will get it and farm schedules will be raised in all directions The old cry that the tariff does not help the farmer but penallztes him has been exploded For the time being at least the free trader has passed out of the picture Q S P How mucli light do dirty windows cut out A Lewis Carrls of the national society for the Hoover work out his own method of farm relief is In terestingIn that It breaks a long silence on the part of the former governor and significant in that it exemplifies a common attitude among farmers Senator McNary of Oregon is leading a movement to rush thru some kind ot makeshift relief legislation But most of the more reputable middlewesterners are dis posed to let Mr Hoover dictate tho plan This Is another way of saying that farmers generally would be better served by delaying all actton on farm rei lief until Herbert Hoover occupies the white house Let the presidentelect make good on his St Louis promise to call a special session of congress if necessary Mr Hopver has said more than once that he regards agriculture as the greatest problem facing the country today His administration Is pledged to a solution of the problem Thats a considerablesized order yet It Is remembered that Mr Hoover has not up to this time fallen down on an undertaking If this pledge were mere big farmers would probably lie more disposed to place their trust in congress than in the president But coming from a man of re markable achievement the inclination will be to let the
