WASHINGTON UP The Army missile chief Saturday urged a crash program to build a rocket with a onemillion pound thrust Major Gen John Medaris said we must have such a rocket by 1961 or be out of the space race WASHINGTON Wi Maj Gen John B Medaris testified Satur day lack of funds held up Army development of a 1500mile mis sile And he said that even now the United States is doing no work on a rocket engine as pow erful as Russia has already per fected Medaris also told the Senate Preparedness Subcommittee that Army scientists offered two years ago to put up an earth satellite but their offer was rejected Medaris commander of the Army ballistic missile agency at Huntsville Ala said the United States is doing no work on a rocket engine of the type that propelled the Soviet Sputnik II into space Advanced Type There is no high thrust ad vanced type rocket engine under development today and it should have been started three years ago Medaris testified Under questioning by Chair man Lyndon Johnson Medaris said he was talking about the kind of engine he be lieves the Russians used in the first stage of launching their 1000pound satellite Rejected in 1955 Medaris said the Army offered more than two years ago to launch an instrumented scientific satellite He did not say how soon the Army had been prepared to put up a baby moon but reported the offer was rejected in August 1955 The Army now has received definite orders to proceed with plans for a satellite launching and Medaris confidently assertec this will be done The Army got these orders after the failure o the board of education He will succeed Lawrence H Shepoiser who is moving to a similar position at Wichita Kan The board of education is to be commended for the judicious manner in which it went about making its selection for a super intendent of school s sad Shepoiser Singularly Qualified It was inevitable that after the study made they should se lect Perley Brunsvold because by his training months before the final board decision is made Deep River Girl Is Victim of Accident OSKALOOSA Fish 14 Deep River was killed Sat urday when the car in which she former prinicipal resigned and has held the position since that time He has been responsible for major changes in the develop ment of the school which has won recognition as one of the outstand ing high schools in the stale Revised Curriculum He also made a complete re vision of the curriculum with em phasis on a broad yet balanced program for all children and in cluded every child having basic instruction in science hiathema 21 Clinton factory worker in a tavern fight late Friday night Schultz was charged with man slaughter and was being held in lieu of pending prelimi nary hearing set for Monday Police Chief Robert La Friday in a collision of their vehicles at an intersection on a county road south of this town about 14 miles east of Iowa City The victims were Max Arthur Trent 48 Walnut the salesman and Francis Horton 46 Musca tine a truck driver Both men were alone Both were believed to have died instantly when the vehicles met at the intersection State ighway patrolmen said Trent vas driving south on the
