was tempered when the crew of the DCS on which I was flying circled over the place at low al titude and gave me a view of the principal points of interest Foremost among these of course was the sprawling Par liament building a white struc ture commanding a lovely view in a landscaped setting Nearby was the admin istrative block almost equally large and love On one side was Australias I own war memo I rial and on the other a towering J column topped W EARL HALL by an eagle with outstretched wings This latter was Australias remembrance of Americans who gave their lives in the South Pacific Beauty Going to Waste Rather close to each other are the American Embassy and the Russian Embassy The latter is brownroofed and theres a star shaped garden But its beauty is pretty much going to waste The Australians have put the run to the Russian ambassador Such care as the Russian property receives now is from Sweden representing Russia until rela tions can be patched up The 500mile flight from Sydney to Melbourne was over the greenest and most productive sec tion of this downunder continent called Australia Tree covered mountains were suggestive of our own Appalachians in conforma The Superior Oil Co of Califor nia which employed them was fined on each of two counts of aiding and abetting the fail ure of Patman and Neff to regis ter The government dropped all other counts of the indictment in cluding an allegation that Neff and Patman improperly tried to influence the vote of Sen Fran cis Case RSD on the natural gas bill The count to which Patman and Neff entered guilty pleas is a mis demeanor which carried a maxi mum penalty of and a year in jail The gas bill was intended to exempt independent natural gas producers from direct federal price regulation It finally was ington fined each and given oneyear jail sen passed by Congress but President Eisenhower vetoed it The President said he was in favor of the measures aims but disapproved the measure because of arrogant efforts on its be half by some petroleum interests Case rejected a campaign contribution which Neff left with a friend in Sioux Falls and ultimately voted against the gas bill Patman Neff and Superior Oil entered their pleas before U S District Judge Joseph C McGar raghy who pronounced sentence after looking over a large number of letters in behalf on the two men Attorneys for the lawyerlobby ists had asked that no jail sen tences be ordered The judge said he could not agree that there be no jail sen tence but said no useful purpose would be served by actually send ing
