the present European conflict upon his observation of developments dur ing the unpleasantness I was on the job in that ear lier era Shortly alter the current rumpus broke out a represen tative of one of our straw vote sy n d i ca t e s asked me as a news veteran Senator Nye dating back to its predecessor if I believed the United States would get into the present one My answer was that if this thing continues for very long were pretty sure to become in volved in it Now I begin to think I was mis taken In 1914 we emphatically didn want to be tangled up in Europes didnt expect to be either In due course we were though It seemed to me a good sized probability that history would repeat itself Desperately for Peace We dont act like it though True at this stage of the game in 1914 we didnt act like it either However at that time we were positive we wouldnt be en tangled We didnt suppose it wa necessary for us to adopt quaian tinerrneasures as P r e s i d e n were desperately afraid that we be dragged in and we ARE quar antining with a vengeance I recall a Capitol Hill statesman saying in 1915 that Uncle Sa would want to have a voice in fi nal postwar peace terms and tha he couldnt very well have such voice if he hadnt been a bellig erent accordingly that hed bette classify himself as at least a mill belligerent Right now Ill bet a congress man would be burned in effigy i he made a similar remark Nyes Contribution Senator Nyes neutrality cru sade had a lot to do with consoli dating American antiwar publi sentiment Yes the North Dakota solori absolute embargo on Yankee arm sales to foreign belligerents wa knocked out recently But it wa knocked out only on the groun that the administration had a even more airtightly antibellig erent plan to offer The cases merits are open discussion Nye and his followers maintai that their scheme was the nir tightest of the two The admin istration insisted that ITS was th airtightest The fatt reman that what was deemed to be th airtightest won That shows what Americans the a i rtightednes thats imaginable There was no such cohesion i this country in the teens of our century A tribute also has to be paid to Senator He started
