Citizenship Stressed at Sessions of Local Hellenic Chapter Americanism and law observance were stressed by speakers at an open meeting of the Mason City chapter of the Order of Ahepa Sun day afternoon in the high school auditorium Severn in addition to members of the local chapter were present The significance of the name Ahepa was explained by Peter E Kamuchey attorney from St Paul The name he said was derived from the first letters of five words which are Americanism Hellenic educa tion progress and association The order he pointed out aims to make good United States citizens out of persons of Greek birth This involves an understanding and de sire to obey the laws of the country Urges Participation Participation in civic and political affairs stated Mr Kamuchey is urged by Ahepa Every citizen has as his primary duty to take part intelligently in community welfare and to be interested in city state and national government In this way the government is by the ma jority are all of one family in America and we are duty bound to look after the welfare of our broth ers be they of different nationality from us or not Petty jealousies should be ignored Progress follows friendly feeling education and willingness to sacri fice A scholarship fund has been created by Ahepa to educate worthy students who are not financially able to go to school The right to vote means nothing unless the vote is cast intelligently 1 Creates Proper Attitude Mr Kamuchey also urged speed in getting together and accomplish ing things The Order of Ahepa he emphasized is not for the purpose of presenting a united front in or der to wield influence butthat by concerted force justice may be brot about by a proper attitude of Greeks toward the United States Hellenic he continued is in cluded in the name altho America comes first because it is a vital part of the organization A bad Greek cannot make a good American nor a bad American a good Greek There is not the slightest concep tion of a nation within a nation The order aims to promote the cause of the Greek people in order that theywill be better citizens of the United States As individuals we can help the United States much but
