May Announce Candidacy By CJJAKLES P STEWART Central Press Columnist REPRESENTATIVE HAMIL TON FISH of New York hasnt exactly declared his candidacy for the republican presidential nomi nation in 1940 but hes ex pressed a will ingness to con accept a n c e oE his partys leader ship if the G O P really wants a man of his type a World war veteran whos an iso lationist from Hamilton Fish from cooperation with other countries in the promotion of in ternational peace That is to say if drafted he wont try to dodge political con scription Personally I dont believe hell be drafted with much energy It isnt advertised that hes been in vited yet by more than one Ameri can Legion post to declare him self Still even that one was suf ficient to jar a statement out o him This doesnt imply that he was very reluctant Let him ge a bit more encouragement anc maybe hell break right into the campaign How well hed run supposing he 3 nominated is decidedly problematic To proclaim him a formid able dark horse would be to over do his case altogether Nevertheless he has his as well as his disadvantages MacNider Denies Seeking Presidential Post rSis principal disadvantage Aat hes somewhat eccentric Fo instance some years hi launched an anticommunistii congressional investigation simi lar to Representative Martin Dies antiAmerican inquiry today Nobody could blame him for be ing anticommunistic but he gave the impression of looking under the bed for a communist hiding underneath every night when he was about to turn in He exag gerated his quiz in short making it a trifle ridiculous Nor was the time ripe for it as Dies incmisi tion is more or less now Folks poohpoohed him Hes been almost overly a paci fist of late Nobody blames him for that either But its com plained that his pacifism has been so excessive a pacifism as to handicap the Roosevelt adminis trations supposedly more reason able kind Hes extremist all right On the Other Hand On the opposite hand hes as honest as summer days are long He hails from President Roose velts own Hyde Park congres sional district It may favor F D for the white house but it elects and reelects and reelects Ham Fish to the house of representa tives Critics of Hams pacifistic poli cies cant dispute that Ham was a valiant fighter in the World war He has half a dozen decorations for bravery in the field Calling him a pacifist doesnt take The American Legion naturally cant but be back of him Pacifists cant but be back of him either He cant be called AntiAmeri can on account of any foreign rampantly otherwise Hes a liberal republican The rankandfile of the repub lican like about half of the demo crats are on the griddle as Tories Almost Dealer Ham Fish verges on being a pronew dealer Hes on record ns against a G O P reactionary presidential nominee He is well enough known Plenty of senators and covcr nors names are not as familiar to the national electorate as his Hes a football hero as well as a legislator In fact as a griddcr lie was so good he made the Ail American team 51 Hes a likable cuss Where he gets the notion that hes a presidential candidate I dont know GO P SUCCESS IPOCAMPAIGN CHIEF INTEREST Would Do Everything in Power to Change Present Situation Hanford MacNider denied here Thursday that he was launching a drive for the republican nomina tion for president asserting that he never has sought political of fice and is not seeking it now He added however that there Is nothing in the world I would not do fo change the present situation whether it be working in my own township or In any other capacity in which a citizen of my political faith could be called upon to function by his party Ail he is interested iji is the success of the republican party in the election next year he said al though he admitted knowing that some of his friends were openly favoring his candidacy It is true that some of my friends are anxious to create some sentiment in my behalf he ad mitted but I have no knowledge of their progress and have not been taken into their confidence The first he knew of any ac tivity was when he was informed by the GlobeGazette while spending Thanksgiving vacation with his family in the east that MacNider for President head quartershad been established in He was in Wed nesday evening he said but aid not go hear the speech by Thomas E Dewey of New York although he did road 5 riles west of Mason City Wednes ay Harry Homrig Mason City stock uyer is in serious condition at the lercy hospital and Mr and Mrs hilds Shoes Are Torn Off by Crash Shoes belonging to four year old Virgil Sanquisf who was killed in the accident unil hats belonging to the Sanquist fam ily were found piled in the bot tom of the death car when it was turned rlghtsidc tip and towed to a garage late Wednes day afternoon The shoes evidently were ripped off he feet of the child by the impact of the accident The Sanquist car is believed to have turned over four or five times before it stopped on its side j N Sanquist and Vern Schoepf ianlontown are in critical condi ion at Park hospital The bodies of Mrs Schoepf and Virgil Sanquist were taken to For est City Wednesday night Mrs Schoepf was killed instantly in the collision and the boy died shortly after Coroner J E McDonald said no nquest would be held and that the deaths were due to an accidental MRS L N SANQUIST 3andit Knocked Out Filling Station Attendant Escapes MINNEAPOLIS Minn Search for the pintsized bandit who escaped after being knocked out by the filling station attend ant whom he shot five times was widened Wednesday The attendant Fred Blabaum was reported in poor condition at General hospital Five bullets had lodged in his arms and legs Blabaum was wounded when he tackled the bandit after turn ing over S35 from the cash regis ter Aided by Harley Kigcr 17 Grand Kapids Minn Biabaum knocked the bandit unconscious and locked him in the filling sta tion washrooms While Blabaum phoned police the robber escaped with an a during an argument at 10 ocloc Wednesday night The men had been drinking and arguing at the home of Joe Gar cia 222 Sixteenth street north west Five witnesses Joe Law rence Joe and Valentino Garcia and Tony Pazo all of 222 Six teenth street northwest witnessed the fight Following the blow that knocked Vaugao to the floor the ax was taken from Gonzalcs and officers were called Witnesses national committee said Thursday that it would be just plain damn nonsense to have six months interval between the na tional convention date and the 1940 election Hamilton expressed his views on delaying the date for the G O F national convention after tiie semiannual meeting of the national committees ex ecutive committee Republican leaders also expressed general agreement that the convention should be held at a date later than the customary meeting time in June The committee did not take any definite action on the proposec change in the convention date anc Hamilton said he had not decidec when to call a meeting of the ful national committee to set a date for the national convention Hamilton pointed out that In could call a meeting of the fu committee as late as February anc under the national committee rule that four months notice b given the convention could b called as early as midJune Fresiaerit Roosevelt has sug gested that both parties delay holding their nominating con ventions both as an economy measure and to provide a fire cracker start and finish to the campaign Immediately after Ulr Roosevelt made that suggestion Hamilton said that the president was not dictating republican party procedure The committee made unofficu apportionments of state tions to the 1940 convention an announced that the total votes wi be 1000 3 less than the numbe at the 1930 convention and th smallest number in many years Hamilton said that the cxecu tive committee discussed pri posals to hold the national con vention cither late in July or ear August All views were
