Observes Its First Anniversary By KICHARD RENDELL WASHINGTON Dec 5 On repeals first anniversary today the bootlegger remains such a menace to government revenues and the legal trade that Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau is reported to be preparing a radio appeal to con sumers to buy only legitimate stuff Strong demands that taxes be slashed are being prepared for the next congress on the theory this would hamper the bootlegger So far Secretary Morgenthau has preferred to give the legal cam paign against the illicit trade more of a trial before urging lower taxes Since repeal became effective on the evening of December 5 1933 federal agents have seized 10947 stills arrested 21622 persons and convicted about 7500 Only Half of Estimates Dr James M Doran head of the distilled spirits code authority said legal consumption of spirits has been only about onehalf of the more conservative estimates made one year ago He called for stiffer law enforcement Government officials estimated the people have drunk 42000000 gallons of distilled spirits and 35 000000 barrels of beer The government which levies a excise tax on each gallon of do t imported liquors arevaSesBed gallon Senate Probers to Summon Hoover 27 Army and Navy Planes Resume Hunt Bare Chance Seen of Finding Vim and Companions HONOLULU Dec 5 a dark drizzlingdawn 27 planea took off from WJieeler field today to re sume search for Flight Lieut C T P Ulm and his two companions with only a bare chance they could find the Australian flyers who were forced down at sea yes terday in their flight from Oakland lal Twentyfour naval planes and three army ships roared into the overcast skies Aviators experienced in flying the stretches of water be tween the islands said it would be a miracle if the searching planes were able to sight the lost flyers considering weather conditions Just Bare Chance One aviator doubted that except by accident the searchers would find the men even if they were certain to be within a known area of 50 miles square adding thats 2500 square miles to search over Theres just a bare chance no more1 A chance and it was considered slim still existed that Ulm his co pilot George Littlejohn and Navi gator J Leon Skilling may have been picked up by a slow Japanese sampan several hundred miles at sea Because the sampans are not equipped With radio news of mien a rescue wouldbe into port early today apparently having given up the search It had turned from its course yesterday when the plane radioed its fuel was exhausted and it was landing on the water Throughout the night 35 naval vessels swept the darkness with search lights and cruising for the luckless flyers today MRS GILLIS WILL SERVE OUT TERM Widow of Slain Baby Face Will Be Returned to Madison at Once CHICAGO Dec 5 Helen M Gillis widow of George Baby Face Nelson will be returned to Madison Wis immediately to serve out her term of a year and a day for violation of probation it was indi cated today by H H Clegg special federal investigator The sentence was meted out because of her part in the episode last summer at Little Bohemia Wis where her husband slew Federal Agent Carter in a gun Mrs Gillis will not be arraigned here on any charge Clegg said Nobody has talked to her since she was taken into custody except agents of our department and she will not be available for interviews until she is safe in a jail cell again Clegg refused to comment on what he had learned from the wi dow who was reported to have sur rendered willingly to federal author ities last Thursday after a tele phonic communication from the home of her sisterinlaw Mrs Juliette Fitzsimmons Her surrender occured Thanks giving night two days after her husband public enemy No 1 had been mortally wounded in a gun battle near Harrington 111 in which he shot to death Federal Agents Samuel Cowley and Herman E Hollis Mrs Fitzsimmons it was re ported said that Mrs Gillis had dis closed shortly before she was taken in custody that Nelson died in bed in a house somewhere near Chi cago where he had been taken by his wife and an unnamed man after he had been wounded This Must Not Happen in Mason City Inasmuch as ye Fellows You have the floor Announce Serum Found That Kills Cancer Cells British Scientist Discovery Cannot Be Used as Yet By OSCAR LEIDING LONDON Dec 5 of a serum which kills cancer cells after they have been removed from the human body and does no in jury to healthy human tissue so re moved was announced here today by Dr Thomas Lumsden director of the London Cancer Research Lab oratories Lumsden one of the best known among conservative cancer scien tists said the serum cannot at pres ent be used on human beings He reported his discovery to the court of governors of the London hos pital The scientist emphasizing strong ly that the serum is only in the experimental stage and has not reached the point where it can be tried on human beings nevertheless said a stage had been reached in which the serum will kill cancer cells removed from the human body without damage to normal cells sim ilarly treated Upholds Clark Dismissal PERRY Dec 5 May A Hills Dallas countysuperintendent of schools upheld the dismissal of Walter G Clark as superintendent of Perry schools who was dismissed on charges of alleged misconduct May 8 Dutch Royal Airlines Order 14 New Planes United States Built AMSTERDAM Dec 5 President Albert Plesman announced today the Dutch Royal airlines has ordered 14 American built airplanes preparatory to speeding up the Bast Indies service The planes are of Douglas make It was a Douglas plane in which the Dutch flyers K D Parmentier and J J Moll won the first handicap prize in the recent EnglandtoMel bourne air derby After arrival of the planes the company plans Taken From Culvert LANSING Mich Dec 5 TV Two hours after the body of 12 year old Leona Georgia Love was found stuffed into a culvert along the route she took to school Leroy Carson 24 year old challenged today by Irenee du Pont to call Herbert Hoover or others who might be able to give first hand evidence on whether the munitions industry interfered with the 1925 Geneva arms conference A statement that Nobel Ltd British munitions firm founded by the donor of the international peace prize was guilty of winking at the rearming of Germany in viola tion of the Versailles treaty was presented today to the committee The committee also received evi dence that the state department in 1925 recognized the allies were con niving with Grmany in violating the Versailles treaty because permitting the illegal manufacture of explo sives in Germany swelled the rep arations fund Charged by Vandenberg Correspondence between the du Pont company and its foreign de partment drew the charge of winking from Senator Vanden berg RMich who was conducting the inquiry One of the letters plainly saic Nobelcoiiidtiave brought pressure on the British government to stop violation of the peace pact by Ger man manufacturers in 1926 but did not do so because of its German connection Senate investigators said today they had new evidence that Ameri can arms manufacturers brushec aside treaties and embargoes to ship their implements of war into Germany and China Members of the Investigating committee asserted their evidence revealed flagrant violation of ths spirit of the Versailles treaty in the sale of arms to Germany The re arming of the reich they added was used as a lever to bring mili tary appropriations in other Euro pean countries Presented Back of this evidence were docu ments which showed investigators said that American manufacturers paid little heed to the American embargo on shipments of arms to China They used these sales in turn it was alleged to sell more products to Japan Before turning today to treating these new phases in public hearing the committee had uncovered evi dence in an attempt to show a con certed effort by arms makers in America and abroad to thwart the Geneva conference called in 1925 to restrict traffic in war materials Called by Hoover The evidence was that American manufacturers gathered at the call of Herbert Hoover then secretary of commerce to express their views on the proposed treaty Letters from the files of the companies in dicated efforts growing out of this conference succeeded in modifying the pact Chairman Nye R N Dak read one of these and commented that Hoover should be credited with a put out and the arms makers with an assist Hoover Issues Statement PALO ALTO Cal Dec 5 Former President Herbert Hoover commenting on the senate munitions investigation issued a statement today declaring the 1925 Geneva convention for the control of inter national arms shipments failed be cause the United States did not ratify FALSE Kreidler of lowaDes Moines Ashford of Boone Named DEs MOINES Dec 5 lictmcnt of two Iowa bankers on charges of malting false Ftate mcnts in connection with HOLC oan applications was revealed here oday on their arraignment before Federal Judge Charles A Dewcy They are Archie L Kreidler of the lowaDes Moines National bank ot DCS Moines and T L Ashford of the Boone State bank of Boone Both men arranged SI000 bonds and were granted further time in which to plead to the charge The ndictmcnts were returned by a fed eral grand jury which completed its session here iate yesterday First Iowa Charges The charges are drawn under the new deal statutes setting up the HOLC and are said to be the first of their kind returned in Iowa The indictment against Ashforrt charges that he represented to the Home Owners Loan corporation that his bank held a first mortgage on certain property to which in re ality it did not hold the mortgage The challenged bank statement is in connection with a HOLC appli cation made by Mrs Winifred E Pcrrine on property at 223 Story street Boone Two Counts Included Two counts were included in the indictment against Keidler both in volving a home loan application made by William H Ruddof Des Moines The first count charges that Kreidler represented that SSSO more was due on Rudds mortgage than was actually the case Kreidler is charged in the second count with agreeing with the HOLC to take its bonds at face value while at the same time in agree ment with Rudd that the latter give a second mortgage on his property to cover the difference between face and One of the facts brought out by this investigation conducted fay Agent McNaugton of the state bu reau was that Leach had not been drinking He played at a dance the night before he disappeared and was let out near his home afterward That he never entered his house then was also ascertained Held in Mayors Office Many who had attended the dance were called to the office of Mayor Fred Trainer where they testified that the only refresh ments he had during the evening were sandwiches and coffee Be fore he went to the dance he had one small glass of beer Two sons of Henry Miller aged 13 and 16 left
