majority of No yptes The county totals were 2073 Yes and 5252 No a 715 per cent No vote Mason City piled up an 82 per cent majority against the Shaff Plan The vote 814 Yes and 3 807 vNo Clear Lakes innocent to a charge of embezzlement Tues day Wright County District Court Judge E J Kelly suspended Jenkins from office said the justice would be tried in January Wright County Atty Robert Maddocks indicted J e n k i n s after an investigation alleged ly revealed in excess of 55 dis crepancies and a deficiency of In Jenkins court books the deficiencies came to light after Maddocks took office in expo sure to cigarette smoke says the American Cancer Society Its report Wednesday came on theh heels of a proposal by the American Medical Associations BoaM of Trustees for a re search program on tobacco and health beyond statistical evi dence The American Cancer Soci etys report was based on 422 094 men who filled out detailed questionnaires and then were traced for an average of 343 months Dr E Cuyler Hammond the societys director of statistical research outlined new find ings the 17th annual clinical meeting of the American Medi cal Association The figures con firm previous findings and go further he said Pipesmokirig Dr Hammond reported death rates were far higher among cigarette smokers than nori they in creased with amount of smok ing and they were lower among exsmokers of a year or longer than among current smokers The latest study aimed at re futing challenges to six earlier ones includes many new fac tors One part of it compares death rates of 36975 matched pairs one smoker and one non The twins were matched for age race height urban or rural residence and numerous other de gree of baldness and frequency of eating fried foods The smok er in each pair used pack of cigarettes a day or more Of the 36975 matched pairs 1385 of the smokers died during the study compared with 662 of the nonsmokers Lung cancer killed 110 of the smokers 12 of the nonsmokers Fifteen smokers died of emphy sema another lung disease compared with 1 nonsmoker More than twice as many smok ers as nonsmokers 684 and 312 died of two arterial dis eases Other causes felled 576 smokers current cigarette smokers were 11 times as high as nonsmokers times as high among very heavy smokers The American Tobacco Insti tute has said conclusive scien tific evidence is lacking to show ruled last May that the present ap portionment of the legislature is unfair Now that the Shaff Plan has been defeated by the voters the court is proceeding to hear arguments from the plaintiffs and the State of Iowa the de fendant on the best course of action The court could leave the pre sent Apportionment in effect and order the legislature to try again to reapportion itself order a courtdrawn
