Churchill cabin near the Castle club at Charles City after Churchill reported someone fired a shotgun through the window while he was telephoning to his wife at Chicago Wednesday night Officers said the blast may not have been intended to hit Churchill as no oneoutside the cabin could have seen him at the time the shot was fired Churchill told officers broken glass covered his clothing and he suffered a small cut on the ear Spencer Raid Was Ordered by Larson Des Monies attorney generals office here confirmed Friday that Deputy Sheriff Thorall All had led the raids on pinball machines at Spencer on specific orders from Attorney General Robert L Larson Larson out of town but the office confirmed that Larson had sent All a letter directing him to enforce gambling laws and confirmed it in a telephone con versation Deputy All seized 8 pinball ma chines and some liquor in raids on 8 places Thursday He was as sisted by city police The machines the oneball type seized last Wednesday in Des Moines Larsons action was believed to be the first direct authorization given by the attorney general to a deputy sheriff Kansas City Man Takes Parsons Sept in Senate Topeka Kans Dar by Kansas Harold E Stassen Word Will Leave China Wednesday Staff Dependents Will Go by Train to Tientsin Port Washington Consul Gen eral Angus Ward reported Friday hat he has arranged to leave Mukden in communist China with lis entire staff by next Wednes day The stale department said Ward also reported that he the stall nembers and all dependents would travel by train to Tientsin a sea port Three American ships the de partment said are due there be ween Dec 6 and 17 The communists ordered Ward and his staff out of the country after trying and convicting him and 4 staff members on charges ot beating 2 Chinese employes Ward and the 4 aides accused with him were jailed for several weeks Arrangements on the actual withdrawal of the consul general and his associates were worked out after Ward wrote the communist mayor of Mudken asking that he be told on Saturday when to ex pect transportation facilities He also asked for 3 days notice to permit time for travel preparation Friday Ward reported that the communists had ordered that he and all the foreign members of he consulate staff must leave Mukden within the 48 hours start ing at 8 a m China time Mon day Dec 5 That corresponds with 6 p m Sunday CST The deadline there fore is 8 a mj Wednesday morn ng China time or 6 p m Tues day night CST the University of Pennsyl vania Taft must be reelected to the senate next year to remain in the presidential nomination contest There is no such hurdle confront ing either Eisenhower or Stassen both of whom are behaving pre cisely as candidates should behave although neither yet has said Im willin Ike wont even say whether he is was or will be a republican or a democrat When he registered for last months elections in New York state the general put himself down as without party affiliation But as president of Columbia university he has waded shoulder deep into national politics A se ries of statements and speeches reached a new political high this week when Eisenhower again di lectly attacked the Truman ad ministration on domestic spending and individual security policies The definition of a liberal he said has become a man in Wash ington who wants to play the al mighty with our money None was puzzled about the identity of the man Eisenhower had in mind He made the remark before the annual banquet of the St Andrews society of the state of New York It brought his rela tions with President Truman a long way from the incident in 1945 which he relates on page 444 of Crusade in Europe which was Ikes book Explaining that he and one other were riding with the includes the presidency in 3948 Ike added that he assured the president he would not be his opponent in that year Dies in Headon Auto Collision Spirit Lake G Hause man 66 of Clarinda was killed Thursday in the headon collision of a truck and an automobile on highway 9 4 miles east of here Deputy Sheriff Ray Lee said the accident occurred when the pickup truck skidded on ice on the high way Mr and Mrs Donald Pro Estherville who were riding in the auto were not seriously in jured Disarms Pair of Patrolmen Gets Their Car Omaha Nebr man be lieved to be escaped Nebraska convict William Dunkin surprised 2 state patrolmen here Friday anc drove off in their automobile after taking their guns The officers stopped to help pull an automobile out of a ditch here they said and the man who looks like Dunkin pulled a gun rnd ordered them to hand ovei their weapons He drove off in the police car touching off a search by authori ties in the city Police said the patrol car was reported going west in south Omaha shortly after the accident A general alarm went out to al authorities Dunkin who escaped from the Nebraska penitentiary Nov 23 previously had unarmed a Mis souri state patrolman in his fligh across several states He was reported in Iowa scvera days ago when an auto he appar ently had stolen was recovered Dunkin was sentenced to a 2 year term for robbery in Douglas county May 3 1940 He was pa roled and later returned to the penitentiary for parole violations BONDS RETIRED Keokuk last of 000 in bonds issued in 1938 to pay for a municipal water plant have been retired Mayor Frank Will mering announced Thursday Counterfeit Bill Rumor Just a Scare A rumor of counterfeit bills being passed in Mason City Friday turned out to be just a scare The United Home Bank and Trusl company and the First Nationa bank of Mason City both deniec having seen any counterfeit bills recently The alleged counterfeit money has a picture of the white house on the reverse side with the in scription The White House and more trees at the one end of the building pictured it was claimed Bank officials pointed out tha this description fits the newer se ries of bills The old series was inscribed White House and did not show the Truman porch and additional trees DES MOINES GETS PHONY S10 BILLS Des Moines Counterfei bills were being passed in Des Moines Friday Bank officials in Des Moines said that the bills now being passed apparently have replaced counterfeit S20 bills which were noticed here from Nov 1 to 10 Wife Stalls Bus Detroit Driver James J Larent suing his wife Marie for divorce charged that she stood in front of his coach and refused to let him start a trip unless he took her along He said she continually nagged him because of her jealousy of Friday rapped the through it the Truman adminis having a general easy money bias under almost any and all circumstances He said treasury policies are forcing inflation at a time when it may be in the interest of eco nomic stability to take the oppo site action Eccles demoted from chairman of the reserve board by President Truman 10 months ago made his criticisms of treasuryadministra tion policies in a letter to Senator Dougias Douglas heads a senatehouse committee studjing government money credit and financial poli cies Eccles testified before the committee last week but expanded on that in his letter Friday Lewis Again Spurns Dawson as Trustee Washington L Lewis refused again Friday to seat harles I Dawson as a trustee of the United Mine Workers wel fare and retirement fund and no agreement was reached on resum ing fund payments The trustees held a 3hour meeting Senator Styles Bridges R N H neutral trustee and Lewis were at odds over the seat ing of Dawson as operators trus tee As a result no conclusions were reached the trustees said in a statement after the meeting The trustees were unable at this time to reactivate the fund Fund payments for all except emergency cases were suspended in September Bridges also said Lewis insisted that his motion made at the last meeting of the trustees about 2 weeks ago to reactivate the fund was priority business before the meeting Friday But the Bridges Lewis deadlock blocked that also Meservey Man Dies of Fumes From Tractor Relmond John F Martih said Friday that carbon monoxide fumes caused the death of a farmer whose body was found beside a tractor The body of Henry Ruiter 43 of near Meservey was found Thursday by his wife He was lying between a tractor and a stalk cutter he had been operating Martin said that carbon monox slightly more has been discovered in Story City high school funds President C E Sem ler of the Story City school board said Friday Semler said the board would meet late Friday with Story coun ty for Racially Restricted Property Washington AP The federal government an nounced Friday that no further FHA financing assistance will be given to any racially restricted Solicitor General Philip B Perlman made the announce ment to a meeting of the York state committee on dis crimination in housing Copies of his remarks to the New York City gathering were made public here Perlman said he spoke for Pres ident Truman Attorney General McGrath and Home Finance Ad ministrator Raymond M Foley He said The federal housing adminis tration is amending its rules so as to refuse to aid the financing of any properties the occupancy or use of which is restricted on the basis of race or creed or color He said he also was authorized to say that the veterans adminis tration shortly will make similar Killed in Brazilian Plane Crash Rio de Janeiro Brazil Real royal Airlines DC3 plane crashed in a rainstorm at an emergency field in Sao Paulo state Thursday killing 20 of the 22 per sons aboard the line announced Friday A woman and her 5 year old daughter were the only survivors of the crash which killed the other 16 passengers and 4 crew members the announcement said The pilot apparently was at Snyder said Friday the governments budget should be But he made no suggestions be yond reiterating a statement that the government should reduce spending in every possible way and maintain ade quate tax rates to keep receipts and outlays in balance Appearing before a senatehouse ubcommittee studying govern ment money credit and financial policies Snyder cited President Trumans estimate that statement National income today is close to the highest level in our history and by every standard of sound government finance the time to have a balanced budget is now Federal expenditures this fiscal year are expected to be 500000000 a peacetime record He blamed a tax cut voted last year by the re publicancontrolled 80th congress President Trumans for the deficit of fiscal 1949 ended last June 30 and the prospect of a 3times greater one this fiscal year Economic Welfare In a written communication to the committee which the latter published recently the treasury chief had said the general eco nomic welfare came ahead of a balanced budget for any one year His statement Friday however recalled his great satisfaction at budget surpluses in fiscal when he became treasury secre Cafe and Bakery badly damaged the Hampton cafe and Rogers bak ery Friday morning and 3 upstairs apartments were made temporar ily unliveable until the damage can be repaired The fire is believed to have started from the explosion of an oil burner in the Walter Rogers bakery on the 2nd floor Rogers purchased the bakery from T C Kaberle 2 months ago The blaze burned through to the Hampton cafe operated by Frank Miller Much damage was caused by smoke and water The entire building was badly damaged be fore the flames were brought un der control Miller lived in the front apart ment upstairs and his household goods were badly damaged by smoke and water Similar damage was sustined by Mrs Esle Han son a widow and Chris Hennnig The building is owned by Mrs Selma Schlefinger of Chicago No
