triments conference on state egislation from going on record is favoring an 8 hour day 40 lour week Bilzzard said we hope to be nble to modify our wage agree ment in the next joint conference and I flattening out of some prices Dr Edwin G Nourse the chair man called at the white house to give Mr Truman a report on the groups studies Picture Brightening Afterward he told reporters he advised Mr Truman that the price situation appears to be brighten ing He added They prices dont seem to be jumping through the ceiling The chairman of the advisory council recently was named by Mr Truman to head advance in the rent field but show food has had quite a down turn and is now moving down at a somewhat slower rate As for clothing he said there has been a softening of prices 9th Iowa Child Dies in Flames Knoxville Ufi Keith 11 was burned to death Thursday in a fire at his home that hospita lized his parents and 4 other children Only the mother Mrs James Keith was in serious condition She was transferred to the Uni versity of Iowa hospital in Iowa City A grandson of the Keiths also was hospitalized here The fire was thought to have been caused by an explosion of an oil stove The boy was the 9th Iowa child to die in a fire in 3 days 4 Children Die in Fire at Cherokee Makes 2nd Such Iowa Tragedy in 2Day Period Cherokee children of Mr and Mrs Charles Duvall burned to death in a farm fire Wednesday It was the 2nd such Iowa tragedy in 2 days Five other children were at school when the Duvall home a mile and a half southeast of Cherokee caught fire and burned to the ground The dead were Robert 8 months Linda Mae 2 years Sharon Lee 3 years Mike 4 years The children were alone in the house when trapped by the flames The father was at work in the fields and the mother had gone to the home of her inlaws Mr and Mrs Fred Duvall who live about 75 feet away from the Charles Duvall home Origin of the fire was not known The home was a 2room 1story frame dwelling It had been built of 2 wooden grain bins fastened together and covered with asphalt siding Goes Next Door The parents said the baby was asleep on the bed when the mother went next door and the other childrewere dressed The 4 bodies were burned and it took nearly 2 hours to recover the remains Tuesday morning 4 children were burned to death at Ottumwa when fire attributed to a defec tive flue broke out while 4 chil dren were sleeping They too were alone at the time Their mother had gone across the street to deliver some mail U Moves Slowly on Aid to Chinese on quite items a number of clothing Soys South y Become nightat the annual dinner of the English Speaking Union Forrestal presumably meant military equipment but he did not say so specifically Recalling that objectives of the Brussels treaty are being of the CIO Farm Equip ment Workers union with the CIO United Automobile Workers was rejected by the executive boards of 12 FEW locals Thursday The FEW executive board which meets in Chicago Dec 15 will consider the merger The CIO national executive board issued a virtual ultimatum at its Portland convention last week telling the FEW to disband and join the UAW Both unions represent workers in college Folsom asked the high caurtto prevent the Alabama electors from backing States Rights Can Red Capture of Suchow Is Reported Communist Radio Claims City Fell Wednesday Night The Chinese communists laid claim Thursday night to Suchow important gov ernment base 211 miles northwest of Nanking This exposed the rear of 3 gov ernment army groups moving slowly southward in an effort to support other nationalist armies isolated under communist attacks in the Suhsien and Pengpu areas ranging down to 100 miles from Nanking Fell Wednesday The communist broadcast heard in Nanking said Suchow fell at 8 p m Wednesday A few minutes before the com munist broadcast the government military spokesman Gen Teng WenYi had said all government troops in at about concentrated for a march southward He de nied however that this meant Suchow had been abandoned Claire Chennaults China air transport pilots who dropped rice to Suchow had reported commun ists within one mile of the city and that refugees were pouring out to the westward Garrison Blocked The Suchow garrison was last reported blocked about 25 miles south of Suchow by strong com munist opposition The communist broadcast wall toppled inward A clothing store barber shop and several apartments were gutted by the flames Champion Steers Sold for Record Prices to Texas Man Chicago grand pion and the reserve grand cham pion steers of the International Live Stock exposition were sold Thursday at record high prices for the show Both were purchased by Glenn McCarthy 40 wealthy Texas rancher and oil man He plans to serve the revision of induc tion quotas announced Wednes day by national defense officials The original January call was for 350 Iowa selective service officials Wednesday hadnt received of ficial notices of the reduction to about half for January inductions but believed such word was in the mails The December induction sche dule calls for about 280 men from Iowa About 175 men were in ducted in November have to pay federal income taxes on the bonuses the state plans to pay them Schoeneman said exemption of state veterans bonuses from fed eral income taxes was standard procedure However spokesman for the state income tax division said they knew of no ruling on the question whether the bonuses would be subject to state tax ation State Rep George OMalley DemDes said he would introduce legislation if
