fired the first talvo of a threeday Michigan Democratic conference Sunday by accusing the Republican adminis tration of falling 100 per cent under the domination of big busi Truman told a news conference at Mackinac Island that One Mans Opinion A Redfe Commentary ly W CARL HALL Editor SCMIDULt KGLO UMMI WTA0 tatacr tMt Designed for Warm Weather TF its too warm for me to do any heavy thinking and it is I should be right in my assumption that listeners and readers are in the same fix So youre going to get a few unimportant recollections out of a reporters noth ing worthy of being called a com mentary j And the first of these has to do with no less a personage than President Dwight D Eisenhower and the first time I ever met him This particular recollection prompted by one of hia last press conferences before feavinc for his this domination started in Mich Tte former President said be did not want to discuss personali ties and he did not mention by name Secretary of Defense Wil son former General Motors presi dent and other Michigan business men in the Eisenhower admin istration Commenting on Demo cratic chances in 1956 Truman said it was not inevitable that Republi cans would win if President Eisen hower is nominated I think the man who will win the election is the one who has the best he said The former president reaffirmed his support of Adlai Stevenson Meanwhile in Washington Re publican National Chairman Leon ard W Hall declared in a state ment that Trumans current speech making sounded like a bitter frustrated Hall criticized both Truman and Democratic National Chair man vacation in Aatod hy he would seek reelection did a bit of sparring He talked about the imponderables of health and other things On the whole what he said in answer to the question was less revealing than his visit not long ago to the New England states That conld well hare been in the nature of political fencebuilding Iti Wit But this recollection of mine goes back to a chilly gray day in Janu ary 1952 when in company with a dozen other newspaper maga zine and radio men I had the privilege of lunching with Gen Eisenhower at his NATO head quarters in suburban Paris At that time one question was uppermost in the minds of all Americans Will Ike Eisenhower accept the GOP nomination if it is tendered Any reporter who could supply the right answer to that one as a scoop would have had a first mort gage on the Pulitzer prize in jour nalism for the year I tried and failed But t went down fighting It was like this General I said as we marched down an amazingly long corridor of the NATO head quarters building on our way to lunch it might interest you to know that at this very moment I am supposed to be sitting down at a luncheon in the Palmer House Chicago with a company of mid Former Officer Indicted in Holohan Case Perjury Claimed in 53 Hearing WASHINGTON federal grand jury Monday indicted for mer Army Lt AJdo Icardi on eight counts of perjury growing out of the mysterious claying of Maj Wil liam V Holonaain World War IL The indictment charged that Icardi now a Pittsburgh lawyer perjured himself in testimony be fore a House Armed Services subr committee in 1953 Icardi stated at the hearing that Holohan was killed by an enemy band that attacked a mission that the major was lead ing behind eaemy lines in Italy SUin in 1944 Holohan was slain in 1944 while on a top secret cloak and dagger mission of the Office of Strategic Services His covered until found in a weighted sleeping bag at the bottom of Lake Orta An Italian court ruled in 1953 that Holohans death was plotted by leardi and former Sgt Carl Lo dolce of Rochester but courts refused to extradite the two Paul M Butler for what ne called their intemperate remarks at a meeting of the Indiana Democratic Editorial Assn Saturday in French Lick Ind With no real issue to take to the people its obvious they are going to rely on smears and per sonal attacks on President Eisen hower and Vice President Hall said In his French Lick speech Tru man accused Eisenhower of mis representation and Vice President Nixon said in New York Sunday night There is no issue we would like better for 1956 than to let the American people chose between the Truman record on domestic and foreign policies and the Eisenhower rec Washington observers say moves among Southern Democrats Loward forming an antiStevenson bloc appear to be foundering for lack of agreement on another candidate for president The recent announcement of Sen Russell before he left for Europe that he definitely will not run again apparently has removed the chief challenger around whom Dixie Democrats opposed to Adlai E Stevenson could have rallied Stevenson the former governor of Illinois who won the Demo cratic presidential nomination in 1952 hasnt yet announced his plans for 1956 But it is widely believed that he will try again Thus far no other possible op ponent has emerged who seems likely to command anywhere near as much Southern supports as Russell did in 1952 when he got 268 5 short of the first ballot at the convention All but 48 of Russells votes came from the South Sen Kefauver who topped both Russell and Steven son with 340 on the first ballot may make a new try next year But Kefauver is no favorite of Dixie Democrats as evidenced by the fact that only 41 of his 1952 votes came from explained I had re moved a watch from my vest pocket The hands pointed to high noon Actually of course the time in Chicago at that moment was early morning due to the zone dif ferential But who bothers himself about such minor matters on an occasion like this The smiling man with all the on bis jacket might have made me famous with an affirma tive even a negative an swer But that isnt what he did He just smiled one of those infec tious smiles for which he is famous and drawled That is interesting Mr Hall very Subject Changed Now I ask you to try making something earthshaking out of that The situation seemed to call for a change of subject We turned to a discussion of some mutual friends For example a neighbor of mine Gen Hanford MacNider was alluded to by Gen Eisenhower my first
