is big asset to Nixon Image on TV not forgotten By ROWLAND EVANS JR New York Herald Tribune News Service WASHINGTON Politics i a changing art For the first time in 100 years the Democrats have taken a senator as their presidentia nominee For the first time in even longer the Republican have taken a sitting vice presi dent as theirs And now perhaps for the firs time ever a vice presidential nominee is disproving an old po litical adage This adage has it that the second man on t h e ticket is driftwood placed there to give the presidential nominee a nice geographical balance or a philosophical counterweight or to pay a campaign debt or to hand the loser in the big race a little something for the history books Henry Cabot Lodge is none of these What is more the evi dence is accumulating that he may be something quite differ ent that rarest of political anij mals a vice presidential inee with a votegetting power quite apart and perhaps even beyond the powers of his run Dingmate FINISHING TOUCHES APPLIED TO POTS OF MULLIGAN STEW Young Doug Lloyd takes a sip as Bill Hammond right stirs PERSONAL BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO MISS IOWA OF 1960 Sally Neville chats with clown Adolph Bangert NIXON HAD careful polls tak en before he chose Lodge as hi runningmate He came out far ahead of the field He was only one percentage point behind New Yorks Gov Nelson A Rockefeller Lodge it is now perfectly clear is a man who but let the voters of Jackson County Indiana tell it Lodge repeated the house wife when the poller got to the question I sure do think he will help Nixon He might carry Nixon in Why you know I think Lodge is stronger than Nixon And he might get New England for the Republicans In another part of town a self employed man answered the questions When he was asked if Lodge helped or hurt the ticket he said quickly Helps Ive studied Lodge quite a bit Hes my man He understands the Russians better than Nixon or Eisenhower North Iowa Partly cloud Tuesday night and Wednes day Lows the quiet afternoon street drives into the country and stops at one farm after another more than not the answer is the same Lodge is experi enced with the Russians and would make an excellent vice president He has in a word a maximum positive image which is almost entirely due to the television medium Whenever Ambassador Lodge is seen on the screen there standing against him is the Rus sian whenever he says hot there is the Russian shouting cold whenever he wags a fin ger there is a Russian shaking a fist This is the image that week after week for almost eight years has come to the living rooms of America GlobeGazette weather data up to 8 am Tuesday Maximum 85 Minimum 62 At 8 am 73 Only 11 cases of polio over Iowa DES MOINES Iffl Only 11 polio cases have been reportec in Iowa communisms attempt to infiltrate the Western Hemisphere via Cuba THIS IN THE opinion of the personalitymolders is the core of the astonishing vibrancy to Lodges image He always represents good his opponent on the screen always embodies the bad There are some distinct liabil ities in Lodges political posture but in combat with the Russian at the U N most of them are lost in the glow of right versus wrong Lodge may not be the farmers delight when inspecting a pigpen Premier Khrushchev said derisively on his tour here last fall when Lodge picked his way across a pig yard with the careful steps of a ballet dancer that Lodge had undoubtedly never before smelled s u c h a And his supreme self confidence which some politi cians call arrogance may an tagonize people on occasion But these
