Hon to Box Car Myrtle Other pictures on pages 2 and 19 Cannonball Eddie Baker from Portland Ore the man who prepared the 1200 gallons of stew lor the big convention was elected king of the hobos here Tuesday noon He succeeds Hobo Ben Benson who was unable to attend the con vention but sent a wire expressing the hope that a worthy successor be named Box Car Myrtle French of Burlington was elected queen The coronation of the king and queen of hobodom was the climax of a giant celebration here at tended by an estimated 20000 per sons Colorful Parade The program included a colorful parade of floats bands and hobos in which a former king Skeets Simmons and Polly Ellen Pep re tiring queen rode in royal robes in the throne float The new king didnt do much campaigning on election day He was too busy with his job as chef de cuisine for the giant gathering But he had laid his groundwork earlier During most of the sum mer he had been working in the Cole Brothers circus kitchen but quit that job some time ago to be gin distributing match books and talking up the convention King Cannonball received a to tal of 183 votes to 174 for his near est rival John Prevatil Humboldt floating sign painter Scoop shovel Scotty Marshalltown got 154 votes King David received 105 votes and Hotshot Benson citi zenatlarge of North Iowa 109 Skeets Simmons who wrested the crown from Ben in 1946 with drew as a candidate shortly before the balloting started Wins Queen Crown Myrtle French who admits she Is built like a boxcar won the queens crown with little diffi culty getting 260 votes to 180 for Polly Ellen Pep retiring queen and 155 for Sylvia Davis Middle town The new queen says she op erates an advertising business at Burlington has 3 telephones and 2 secretaries and a soft heart for fellow travelers of the road to the extent that she has provided lodg ing for many of them Melchior is her favorite singer The absence of the retiring king Ben was genuinely re gretted here His wire was read by Master of Ceremonies Hank Hook at the election It expressed the hope that a most successful con vention would be held and that worthy persons would be elected to occupy the throne of king Tuesday The Chinese communists prepared to strike into the prov ince holding this nationalist refu gee capital The rumor was that the top na tionalist came here to squelch any move for a local peace with the move which has been ad vocated by some influential per sons Chiang will preside at a meeting of the Kuomintang nationalist party emergency council a sup reme war cabinet which was cre ated during his 8day stay here last month Abandon Plans for Sale of Lansing Bridge Lansing receiver ol the bankrupt Blackhawk Bridge company Tuesday abandoned plans to sell the bridge at public auction after 2 attempts failed to draw a bid W E Albert receiver said no bidders appeared at Mondays public auction He had the same result at a sale in May The bridge has been closed since March of 1945 when the bridge company went bankrupt An ice jam washed out ap proaches to the bridge and it has never been repaired Okay Arms Plan for 5 Nations Senate Committees Delay Decision on Atlantic Pact Aid Washington combined senate committees on foreign rela tions and armed services Tuesday approved of arms aid for Greece Turkey Iran Korea and the Philippines The committees delayed until later this week a decision as to how much military assistance shall be given European members of the Atlantic pact under Presi dent Trumans arms aid program Chairman Connally DTex of the foreign relations committee announced that the combined groups approved 5211370000 for Greece and Turkey and 000 for Iran Korea and the Phil ippines Similar amounts have been ap proved previously by the house which cut in half the 000 asked by the president for European members of the Atlan tic alliance Connally told reporters that the committee also approved amend ments by Senator Smith RN J pledging the United States to exert maximum efforts to provide the United Nations with armed forces and to obtain an agreement or universal regulation and re luction of armament The combined committees acted ns Senator Tuesday that he gave James V Hunt information on army buying plans in 1947 but declared it was not confidential and he did not know of Hunts position as a so called 5 per center In the witness chair he welcomed the inquiry and prepared to justify every ac tion I have taken and every de cision I have made Feldman had a long prepared statement the gist of which was that he had done nothing wrong crowd at the annual hobo convention in Britt Tuesday Wife Baby Sits for Children of Rival Chicago Ruth Young said in a divorce suit Monday that her husband had been going out on dates while she had to act as baby sitter for the other womans children The suit against C O Young BO superintendent equipment for the Illinois Central railroad charged cruelty but did not name the alleged rival Mrs Young 58 was awarded temporary judgment of a month for support and a half in terest in oil well property her hus band owns Search for Lost Child Continues Aitkin Minn troops and volunteers were rushed into the forests near here Tuesday to search for a little boy lost in the dnrk and gloomy woods amidst dangerous bears The boy 3yearold Larry Cole m a n vanished Saturday while gathering pine cones with a broth er and sister They and their par ents Mr and Mrs Kenneth Cole man of New Brighton Minn had been visiting here with their grandparents Almost 1000 men aided by bloodhounds and airplanes were searching the swampy woods Most of them were volunteers and vacationers but about 260 were guardsmen from 2i battalions sent to aid the hunt Another busload of volunteers left New Brighton before dawn Tuesday and there was a possibil ity that more guardsmen would be ordered into the search The country was described by a veteran lumberjack as the roughest in Minnesota Bears abound but he said were found the wreckage of a plane reported missing in northern Manitoba with 21 persons aboard since Sunday The announcement said there was no sign of life around the craft which had crashed and burned 250 miles northeast of Winnipeg The plane took off from Churchill on Hudson Bay for Winnipeg after an Arctic circle swing to replace outpost weather bureau personnel and to bring sick Eskimos here for hos pitalization The RCAF announcement said a para trooprescue team is pro ceeding to the scene of the crash Aboard the craft were 7 crew members 8 sick Eskimos a Ca nadian press reporter 4 meteoro logical department men and a woman physiotherapist B36s Cost More Than Billion Washington air force gave congress an estimate of Tuesday on the cost of the B36 bomber program The figure came out in testi mony by Lt Gen Edwin W Raw lings in the house armed services committee investigation of the iant atomic bomb carrier Rawlings followed other high air force witnesses who chorused denials that Letter to Russians Claim Pressure Has No Effect on New Policy Belgrade Yugoslavia ex pressed willingness Tuesday night to reach a settlement with Russia on all disputed questions be tween the 2 feuding countries In a new note to the soviet gov ernment Yugoslavia told Moscow that Premier Marshal Tito was willing to end the bitter fight with the kremlin At the same time Yugoslavia served a stern warning to Russias rulers to keep their hands off the internal affairs of this Balkan communist country 1st Cooling Word The note was the first cooling word in a war of words that had become white hot in the past 2 weeks It was the 7th note in an exchange between Belgrade and Moscow Yugoslavia formally expressed her readiness to approach the so lution of all disputed questiona with the
