Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - August 17, 1964, Mason City, Iowa Sfore Leftler SkiptonNO budget passed It to The City Council of Mason City meeting in emergency ses sion Monday morning approved the 19C5 budget as published in a 41 vote The action came after the council met in execu tive session for 1 hour and 27 minutes The budget includes Cor a new airport terminal and for City Hail improve ments focal points of a running disagreement over approval Total expenditures for the coming year will be The amount to be raised by tax ation is or 28309 mills This is 317 mills more than the 1964 taxes The Monday morning vote climaxed 49 days of study and controversy over the budget Approval came in a vote change by two members of the United Community Party Dan H Shire and Ray Randall They were joined by C E Lcffler an As sociated Citizens Party mem ber and Harry Little now an Independent Although commending the vote of Shire and Randall Coun cilman Phil Skipton voted against the budget Councilman Waller Broadbenl now on va cation was not at the meeting The budget now goes to the county auditor for certification According to state law it should have been certified last Satur day The five council men and May or George E Mendon walked out of the executive session which began at and into the council chambers at am quiet and somber Following council roll call people Bruce Arden Swenson 21 and Hop Olive 18 were critically injured Both were taken to the Clarion hospital and Swenson then was flown to Ucs Moines Highway Patrolman Ben Urban said the young people were in two cars both north bound which went off a straight stretch of road about midway between Blairsburg and High way 3 One of the cars ended up in a cornfield Urban said the other a 1964 Chevrolet plowed into the ditch alongside a gravel road that runs at right angles to Highway 69 Mr and Mrs George Dammej of Casper Wyo aftd their daughter Denisc 13 were killed Saturday morning when
