Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - August 1, 1929, Mason City, Iowa TWO VILLAGE IN IOWA IS UNTOUCHED BY AGE OF MODERNS St Donatus Is Old World One Fill ing Station ST DONATUS Aug 1 easternIowa some 14 miles from Dubuque there remains today a bit of Old Europe j In this village where prohibition isnt a question because they dont have of it and where the wheels of progress have not ground away natures beauty live 50 or 60 Luxemburgers whose forebears came to this country 80 years ago There are no railroads no paved roads no xjumble of gasoline sta tions and road houses in Saint Donatus Old methods still hold sway in the town but one will search far before he finds a group of persons living together in the contented atmosphere which sur rounds this historic ground Buildings of Stone Few modern architects could match the craftsmanship which was employed in erecting tha buildings They are of heavy stone covered with smooth cinder stucco composi tion The proportions of their fa cades and the designs formed by perfectly arranged doors and win dowl give the bluldlnga a remark ablft degree of unity Only one change has come over the village since it was founded in 1849 That is the name by which the town is known des Morts was the name of this Catholic settlement in the early days The name it issaid had its origin following a hat tie of two In dian tribes An Old Custom The story goes that a young chieftain of the Winnebagoes named Watumni had fallen in love withthe beautiful daughter of a Fox chief tain Nita But Nita scorned Wa tumnla love and following an old Indian custom the latter spat in Nitas may have been the custom but it wasnt polite A warfollowed in which many were killed and Injured The blood of their bodies reached a stream whicu flows thru St Donatus and the French pioneers seeing the red dened waters suggested the name Tete des Morts The stream still is known by that name Upon agreement the name was changed to Saint Donatus after their patron saint Progress Leaves Mark The inroads of modern progress have left a mark in the settlement however Years ago there were two blacksmiths a shoemaker a miller a tailorand a harness makerbut todaynthere is one blacksmith a creamery a garage a pool hall a postof fice and a genital One school is maintained in the village with four nuns as instruc tors But the art of modern love making aid advice as to how to be popular flappers and flaming Lotharos has no part in the curri culum Instead the children are taught two languages and the arts of the profession which theythink they want to follow Each year sees the population of the settlement dwindle Some of the homes are now empty but they still maintain their architectural beauty Duluth Will Dedicate New Skyline Highway Connecting 14 Parks DULUTH Aug 1 new Skyline parkway a stretch of scenic highway 53 miles long from the en trance of Jay Gooke state park to the east line of StLouis county on the1 north shore connecting 14 Du luthparks and the Boulevard drive be dedicated at ceremonies at the tourist camp at the state park Saturday Governor Christiansen has been Invited to attend the dedicatory ex ercises while Lieut Gov Charles E Adams of Duluth Is on the program to give a talk Several other short talks will be given by prominent St Louis and Carlton county men in addition to members of the Minne apolis park board board has decided upon a determined stand against pro fessional who have been seeking to organize the farmers for benefits under the agricultural marketing act and believes it has fortified itself so that it willnot be misledby their representations The farm board has been swamped with applications for jobs but the most persistent of these have been individuals some de scribed as well meaning evangel ists and others as high pressure promoters who believe they see opportunity for their talents in the newly enacted farm law To practically all of the coopera tive organization promoters the board has shown the door with the declaration that the policy of the commission Is to build up exist ing cooperatives The desire of professional pro moters to organize farmers is held by the board to spring from the knowledge thata great deal of 1 government money is for In another categoryiire the apparently large number of welt meaning mdlviduals who believe they can assist the board by visiting among the farm ers and merely spreading a good will gospel of a fair perdlem remuneration The business of protecting the farmer most effectively Is expected by board members to become easier after the scattered existing associa tions are more closely amalgamat ed This is expected to develop after the centralized cooperative mar keting corporations have been es tablished and a national chamber of cooperatives economics has been founded Corn Root Worm Is in Nashua Corn Fields NASHUA Aug corn rent warm has been found to be at work in a field of corn in a farm two miles east of town belonging to M J Heald and is said to be working in some of the fields west of town The agent of PJoyd county exam ined some of the plants and found the roots cut off just below the sur face The worm was in evidence in all three stages the beetle the pupa or resting stage and the norm Thornton Church Gives Family Farewell Party THORNTON Aug farewell party was given In the Methodist church annex for the E W Lilley family The family was presented with an electric waffle iron by the community and Mr Lilley with a camera by the Boy Scouts Mr Lillsy will be superintendent of schools at Fertile this year Barn and Hoghouse on Greene Farm Are Destroyed by Blaze GREENE Aug barn ami hoghouse on the farm ofLeo Dowc ing four miles south of here were destroyed by fire yesterday after noon about 5 oclock No stock was lost but a considerable amount of hay stored in the barn was burned Tabernacle to Close Bible School Friday The childrens summer Bible school which has been in session at the Alliance Gospel
