Selection of 7 Spacemen By WARREN ROGERS JR York Herald News Service WASHINGTON This is the story of a loser in the race to be the first man in space All America and much of the world must know by now the story of the seven military test pilots named April 9 and the harrowing phys ical and psychological tests which led to their selection as the first U S The select seven are in the process of moving their families to Langley Air Force Base Va There for the next two years they will train for the first U S effort to send a man into orbit But what of the other 25 mil itary test pilots who volun teered won acceptance as semifinalists and underwent the tests What kind of men are they What makes them tick How do they feel about not hav ing been chosen ABSOLUTELY NO Sour said one of them I am only grateful for the chance to meet the fine men who took part and kind of proud that I was considered one of Lets call this man Air Force Capt X He is 35 the father of a boy and girl not yet old about free of their cells during the up rising but took no active part in BUMPING COLONEL Relieved of Command TOKYO UP1 The U S Air Force announced Thursday it has reprimanded Lt Col Charles H Platt Jr and relieved him of his command for his part in bumping seven enlisted men en route to the United States on emergency leave last month Platt 49 of Brooklyn N was relieved of his post commander of the Air Terminal Squadron at Tachikawa Air Base and made to forfeit onehalf months salary Tht Air Force said Platt was being transferred The enlisted men sard Platt ordered them bumped from the plane so he and his wife and their four children could leave for a Hawaiian vacation They said they pleaded with him but that he turned away and ordered thismiiwt off the aircraft The evidence does not budget Only the bill for construction of new buildings at various state institutions has been signed into law However the lawmakers are past the halfway mark on other appropriations measures total ing
