said It was a perfect day for flying We didnt see any Communist planes No shots were fired at us We landed picked up the boy and got out It was as easy as Night Speed Limit Sent to Loveless DES MOINES bill to se a maximum speed limit of 6 miles an hour at night on highways received final passage Monday It now goes to Gov Hersche Loveless for his signature Un der the bill Iowa still will no have a daytime speed limit Final assembly action came when the Senate decided to ac cept the House version providing for a speed limit at nightonly The Senate had passed a bil which would have set limits o 70 miles an hour in daytime and 60 miles an hour at night The house amended the Senate bill to remove all mention of any speec limit during daylight hours Sen Raymond Gillespie D who sponsored the Sen ate bill said the House amend ment leaves us with half a loaf but maybe its better to accep half a loaf than no loaf at The bill as passed does not per mit drivers to go over 60 miles an hour at night when passing another car The Senate bill had provided a tolerance when passing another car Gov Loveless said Tuesday he expects to sign the bill unless there is some technical fault in If approved as Battle Creek Man Killed in Accident BATTLE CREEK E Lundt 34 Battle Creek was killed Tuesday when his car smashed through the side of a bridge and plunged into a ravine on a county road 2V4 miles south final adjournment day But there was no clear indication of when the lawmakers might finish their work The Sen ate last week passed a res olution calling for final ad journment at 5 Tues day However the House has not acted on the reso lution and probably wont until the end is in sight 6343 House Vote Kills Liquor Plan DES MOINES UP The House ought the liquor issue over again Tuesday and in effect killed by a vote of 6343 a bill to legalize the sale of liquor by the drink Technically the vote was on a motion by Rep Tom Frey RNe ola to take the bill away from the Sifting Committee But tha did ency Agency drivers presently erage an hour Adhere f to Party Lines Little Debate on Measures DES MOINES UP The House voted almost entirely along party lines Tuesday to pass over Gov Loveless veto a bill to exempt farmers from paying sales tax on gasoline and to give financial as sistance to urban bus systems The vote to override on the bus bill was 7334 Rep Casey Loss DAlgona voted with the Repub licans to override the veto All other Democrats voted against it and one Rep John Duffy Du buque was absent On the sales tax exemption measure the vote was 7334 Rep Peter Steenhusen DIrwin and oss joined Republicans in voting o override the veto and Rep Tom Frey RNeola joined the Demo crats Surprise The moves to override the gov ernors vetoes came as a sur prise There was practically discussion on the move to pass the bus aid bill and only relatively brief debate on the sales tax measure The move caught Democrats flatfooted and with 3 of their 3S members absent when the began All 72 Republicans present 4 It took a twothirds vote to over the governors veto and ia each case the vote was sufficient The bus bill would exempt fi nancially hardpressed transit sys ems in 16 cities from paying the present registration fees compen sation taxes gas taxes and fran chise taxes The measure would give the relief for two years only The sales tax bill would provide hat farmers who get refunds on gasoline purchased for nonhigh vay uses would not be required o pay the state sales tax Also exempt from the sales tax would be materials used in disease con rol weed control insect control
