Witness Seating of DePriest EDITORS L J Dickinson whose husband con gressman from the tenth district has announced his candidacy for the senate describes a rainy week In Washington The Daughters of the American Revolution have been meeting in the national cap ital and Mrs Dickinson in ft very interesting manner tells of their entertainment by the president und Mrs Hoover The trlu thru Vir ginia which was promised for this time has been delayed and will appear In a later letter to Jane ST ST S E MASON CITY My dear Jane You have often wondered why I say I am glad this week or that week is ended You say you would get a thrill every day just being in Washington but if you were I in stead of you I am sure you too would say How glad I am that this week is nearly over Altho it has been an enjoyable week it has been a strenuous 0115 It started in raining Monday and has continued nearly all week and I am sure that there is no place on earth as wet as Washington when it rains The League of the American Pen Women of which I am a mem ber had a two day session and an interestingbreakfast where we heard and saw many celebrated aulVors The D A Rs are here in all their glory decorated with row vipon row of badges and bars They are to be here all week I never looked up but two revolutionary ancestors but seeing so many bars each bar means an extra revolu tionary ancestor I am getting in terested again and am going to see if I cant be as decorated next year as the most ofthem See Husbands Take Oath Of course we had to go over lo ho capitol to see our husbands take the oath of office and inci dentally to see the new congress women the three Ruths and also DePriest the colored congressman Jrom Illinois Tho house was I jammed Many women and men Loo stood in the halls and gallery doors waiting for a chai ce to get in and others stood on chairs peer ing down into the well or floor of the house The colored folk were out in strength too to see one of their race sworn in for the first time in 20 years Oscar DePriest their rep resentative sat in the center of the republican side dressed in a natty grey suit He has qtiite long wavy white hair and looking at him at a distance one would hardly think he was a negro he is so light We ex pected his wife to sit in the mem bers gallery with the rest of us but she sat in the public gallery with several of her friends We are won dering if she will join the congres sional club as she has a perfect right to do Any wife of a senator or representative may be a member and attend all meetings and enter tain there too Women Sworn In It was interesting to sec the small bloc of eight women legis lators sworn in Of the three Ruths I believe Ruth Bryan Owen of Florida is much the hand somest She is tall and slender and has beautiful nearly white hair Mrs Rogers of Massachusetts has come to be known as the home made lady because she invariably wears dresses made from goods made in her own district Three the women congressmen are grand mothers altho they seem scarcely old enough They are Mrs Langley of Kentucky Mrs Ruth Pratt of New York and Mrs Ruth Bryan Owen of Florida Mis Pratt and Krs McCormick are women of great wealth and arc living in love ly old homes in Georgetown We stopped in the senate for a few moments Dolly Oann center of the recent society dispute was in the gallery She wore a light grey coat and blue hat I looked for Mr Gann but did not find him I suppose he was not interested The gavel that Vice President Curtis used is the most historic relic in usu today It has been used by every vice president including John Adams the first of the line and it is made of ivory and shaped like a small hour glass without a handle Senate Desks Interesting The desks in the senate arc in teresting because they are the very ones taken from what is now the supreme court chamber and some of them were used by the greatest statesmen in our Clay and others On these desks arc still kept the old silver topped ink stands and the sand shakers which in the olden days were used Instead of our modern blotting paper To day some of the senators occasion ally dust some of this sand over a paper they have signed for a con stituent to add a little touch of the historic past The old Daniel Webster desk has Leen assigned to Senator Watson of Indiana the new majority leader Host of the old desks were remade but this one was left as it was with cut a hinged lop A shelf has been put under the desk to place books and papers upon The most historic desk of them all is now occupied by J Senator Pat Harrison of Mississip pi Senators from that state always endeavor to secure the use of it during their terms in the senate It was the desk of Jefferson Davis During the Civil war the senate chamber was occupied by conval escent Union soldiers When they found thj name of Jefferson Davis then president of the Confederacy on this desk several of the more hot tempered plunged their bayon ets thru the side of it to show what they would like to do to its former occupant The places where the bay onets passed thru are still notice able to the touch Pros I dents Room Vivid In the presidents room the walls and ceilings are 4beautifully painted in vivid coloring The furniture in this room has been preserved since Lincolns day and the center table was used formerly at the white house as a desk by Lincoln and is the one on which the famous Eman cipation Proclamation rested when the Great Emancipator signed it One of the particularly attractive ceiling decorations is above the word Religion and is called The AllSeeing Eye because the expres sion is the same from whatever fnge you look at it There are some 60000 dcgelatcs here attending the D A R con vention and they are the bugbear of the taxi drivers The new D A R hall is not quite completed so the meetings are being held in the big Washington auditorium nnd it is rather a hard place to get to and far from the hotels and D A Ji hall Two interesting statues have been unveiled A statue of a woman cut from Tennessee marble and seven feet high a memorial to the four founders of the D A H is placed in a friendship garden in the grounds of the D A R hfxll which is to be planted with plants and flowers of historic origin aa a tribute to the retiring president general of the D A R The other statue the twelfth and the last sta tue to be erected by the D A 11 to mark the ocean to ocean Na tional Old Trails road was unveiled at Bcthseda Md just out of Wash ngton The statue which repre ents a pioneer mother with her children is of a rugged beauty vhich makes a fitting memorial to nark the trail traveled so bravely by the American women of pioneer days Reception Is High Spot One of the high spots of the an nual convention of the D A Its s the reception at the white houtio Jivcn them by the president nnd his wife During the Coolidge regime word was sent to the convention oxfords Around her neck she wore a black fur First Lady Shuns Splendor think we will have to look to Mrs Gann for tho gorgeous gowns now and to some of the cabinet ladies Mrs Hoover just doesnt care for them And they say Jane that Mrs Hoover waves her own hair and has no facials No clever fingered masseurs or marcel artists are making regular calls at the white house This is a blow to the beauty doctors in Washington She is the first mistress of the white house in the past 20 years with such a record but she hasnt been there very long so she will probably succumb too before many months I will never forget Mrs Hardings hair She had it done frequently and wore it in a flat wave It was so perfectly marceled that it looked al most like a wig A bright new Packard limousine type blue with red trimmings is being used as President Hoovers official car but the president has bought himself and Mrs Hoover each a car that they call not of icial The license numbers on hose cars are purposely large so ihey will not attract attention Of icial cars have low numbers Mrs Soever drives her own car and I tiave several times seen her caught in a traffic jam along with the rest of us Even the policemen do not always recognize her but that is just what she wants She does not have a secret service guard tagging along after her as did Mrs Harding and Mrs Coolidge and I Imagine she feels quite relieved Mm Hoover evidently believes that the troublesome years following the World war are ended and that times are safe even for a presidents wife President Addresses A Ks Before the delegates were asked into the white house on the day of the reception they were given a lit tle talk by President Hoover on the steps I suppose he tried to explain just why he did not address the D A Hs at their opening The hostesses had been asked to be there earlier than the rest They were asked to remove their hats so they would be known as hostesses Then each was given a card with I the description of the room in which j she was to be stationed as it were It was surprising how many ques tions were asked by the delegates as they wandered from one room to another after being introduced to President and Mrs Hoover One 1 old lady said she had peeked Into the pantry If I had known she was I going to do that Id have been right 1 there too One hostess u young woman became rather faint and Mrs Bowman noticing it asked her to go up in the living rooms on the and rest a bit When the other hostesses heard she had Cuba Rushes New Capitol HAVANNA April 23 Cuban government has tripled the number of workmen on the new na tional capitol in an effort to have the building ready for the scheduled dedication on May 20 Horse Cubs Block Truffle PARIS April 23 drawn vehicles run afoul of the Paris police more often than do the Egyptian cigaret Industry Many viotlations are committed by driv ers of private cars and trucks Your Best Hosiery Value BOBOLINK SILK HOSE GUARANTEED SI DamonIgou Co hall for only those to come who had never been there before This was done to reduce the size of the crowd The Hoovers asked nil the delegates to come and some wonder if this welcoming of all the dele gates was not to make up for the presidents failure to make his ap pearance at the opening meeting of the convention We had an interesting group of Iowa D A Rs some 90 of them at our Iowa luncheon Tuesday Af ter several talks had been given one of them by the West Branch school teacher of Herbie Hoover as she called him Mrs Bowman an Iowa woman and one of Mrs Hoovers secretaries announced to us that Mrs Hoover was on her way to the hotel to greet us It was certainly a surprise to us We never dreamed that a presidents wife would appear at such a gathering But here she came escorted by two Iowa D A R pages Mrs Hoover told us that she had come to personally ask us to be hostesses at her D A R reception that she wanted the delegates from both her home states Iowa and Cal ifornia to assist her Of course there wasnt one who not de lighted Each delegate was then in troduced to her After a little gen eral visiting she bade us goodbye and left the hotel Mrs Hoover was dressed very simply but perhaps it was because of the very stormy day Her suit was severely tailored it was black with a three quarter length jacket and the skirt was quite long Her hat was a small black felt and her shoes were black gone up to the coveted roomsthey all tried to look faint too but it did not work in their cases The wives of the Iowa delegation in congress gave a tea at the Con gressional club for the Iowa D A R delegates and I believe all the delegates were there Several of the congressmen came over to the club house after congress had adjourned to meet their constituents and have tea with them Now here I am Jane finishing my letter to you when I should be out in the kitchen We are having a dinner party of 12 tonight and it is nearly 4 oclock Pieaae forgive me if my letter is somewhat ram bling I havent forgotten my let ter to you about
