GIVES STORY OF DEANMARSTON Brother of Mason City Doc tor Has Had Envious Career as Engineer A somewhat lengthy article in the Proceedings of the American So ciety of Civil Engineers tells the life story of Anson Marston brother of Dr C it Marston of Mason City and recently elected president of tho engineering society Engineer Marston who is known to a number of Mason City resi dents and who owns farm land in Cerro Gordo countyhas for 25 years beendean of the engineering school of Iowa State college His ability has been recognized by his appointment to a number of im portant assignments The article in the engineering or gan pictures Mr Marstonas a pro duct of themiddle west altho a large part of his education was ob tained at Cornell university He was reared at Rockford H He went to Iowa State college in 1892 as pro fessor of civiZ engineering and later was made deanand director of the Iowa engineering experiment sta tion Mention Is made of the fact that Mr Marston was a member of the engineering board of review for the sanitary district of Chicago Un 192i25 and that he was consulting engineer on sewerage and sewage disposal at Miami He has been president of the society for the pro motion of engineering education and has been active in such organiza tions as the American Society for Testing Materials the chairman ship of the joint concrete culvert pipe committee and other projects For almost 25 years he has been one of the three members of the Iowa State Highway commission During1 the World war he was major ofengineers becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1918 WOULD Mason City The meeting was in charge of the service station depart ment of the company The meeting at noon was presided over by H E Hanson local branch manager of the Standard Oil com pany while other sessions were in charge of Earl S Daughhetee serv ice station superintendent ariisted by H E Radasch sales manager Policeman May Be Deputy Sheriff on No Pay Opinion Says TheL offices of city policeman and deputy sheriff without pay are not Incompatible Attorney John Flet cher ruled Tuesday in an opinion given County Attorney Roe Thomp son of Mason City The opinion sought by Mr Thompson to clear up the legality of a practice common in this and other counties of appointing as deputy sheriffs without pay the police offi cers in outlying towns and commun ities The opinion written by Assistant Attorney General Neill Garrett said in part Wa are of the opinion that such offices are not incompatible and that it would be proper for the same per son to hold offices for the reason that where the policeman is acting as a deputy sheriff without compen sation he is not depriving the county of a deputy sheriff which it might otherwise have WORDOFBLAISE DEATH RECEIVED Haeckel H Blaise Dies in East Following Long Illness Word has been received in tUe city of the death of Haeckel H Blaise 34 son of Dr and Mrs T T Blaise of this city which oJ curred Tuesday morning in a hospi tal in North Hampton Pa Mr Blaise died following an operation Friday after an illness bfa year He had made his home for the past nine months with his wife and fam ily in Egypt Pa a suburb of Al lentown Mr Blaise was a former resident of Mason City coming here from Sigourney with his parents when he was three years old He attended school here and was completing his final year at the Diversity of Iowa when the war began He enlisted in chemical warfare and following his return from the army he was employed in Kansas City as a chem ical engineer Mr Blaise later took up residence with his family in Egypt and was employed by the Giant cement company located in Allentown He was recently re turned from the coast where he aided in the construction of a ce ment plantMr Blaise who was a chemical engineer was regular contributor to several engineering magazines Surviving are his wife formerly Maybelle Sullivan of Albert Lea two daughters Marilyn 1 and Pat ricia 5 and a son Burke 9 months old his father and mother Dr and Mrs T T Blaise residing in this city and one brother P C Blaise of Kansas City who has been hero for the past three months Funeral arrangements have not been made but the body will be James F Green of Davenport pleaded ilty before Federal Judge Fred L Wham to a liquor charge with two codefendants Sentence will be pronounced after seven others who pleaded not guilty to the Charge
