Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - April 15, 1961, Mason City, Iowa North Iowa Daily Newspaper IdiUd for MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE The newspaper that makes all North lowans neighbors HOME EDITION VOL and United Press Inlernillonil Full MASON CITY IOWA SATURDAY APRIL 15 1961 7c a Copy Paper Consists of Two N0 disappear from use CLOUDY anyone By DICK WEST WASHINGTON came to my attention recently a press release put out by a weekly magazine which I shall tactfully refrain from identify ing It reported that the U S Bureau of Engraving and Print ing had discontinued the print ing of and 000 bills I was of course outraged when I read this If theres any thing I loathe its to have my wallet cluttered up with a lot of small currency I carry my wallet in my in side coat pocket and any extra ballast there tends to make me with a starboard list CONSEQUENTLY I hopped a cab to the governments money making factory on 14th Street intending to lodge a protest with Henry P Hollzclaw the bureau director As it turned out the cab driv er didnt have change for a bill and that added to my temper You know how little inconveniences can get under your skin Needless to say by the time 1 was ushered into Holtzclaws office I was dang near on the brink of apoplexy Had there not been so many armed guards around I might have done something rash Now calm down Holtzclaw said or words to that effect The picture is not as black as the magazine paints it TECHNICALLY he explained the bureau has not discon tinued the production offour fiveandsixfigure currency It just hasnt made any recently because the supply exceeds the demand He said banks have a back log of big denominations mould ering in the vaults The bureau hasnt printed anything larger than a bill since 1945 But if the need arose he as sured me the bureau could print a new batch of long play ing lettuce in short order I asked Holtzclaw if this meant that big bills were go ing out of style He replied that he just printed the stuff and didnt concern himself with fads or fashions HOWEVER SOMEONE at the Treasury Department told me that big bills got sort of a bad name during the war Anyone who walked into a bank with a bill ran the risk of being suspected of black market deal ings Black marketeers tax dodg ers and other shady operators like to deal in big currency be cause it fits so cozily into safety deposit boxes Iowa Partly photographers plus all the am bassadors assigned to Moscow crowded into the green and white stucco House of Sciences to hear the worlds first suc cessful astronaut tell of his 108 minute flight in outer space GAGARIN DID not answer questions directly from the floor during the twohour televised conference He read a prepared statement and then made his replies to a series of written questions he said had been handed up in advance With a confident smile on bis lips he managed to turn aside all requests for specific in formation about the landing and the space ship itself There have been suggestions in Russian reports that the 27 yearold astronaut left his space capsule in the air at the end of the flight and came to earth by parachute Gagarin opened the question period by saying many inquiries had been re ceived about his descent and re turn to the earth With an adroitness worthy of a politi cian he lumped them together and gave this answer MANY TECHNIQUES for landing have been
