ClTiON Preu Onlttd fnn ttootl Full LCIM MASON CITY IOWA THURSDAY APRIL 14 1M 7o Copy Paper Consists of Four m f Few of us write our leaders Only 6 of every 100 take time to voice opinions By KENNETH FINK Princeton Research Service PRINCETON NJ DO the letters that come into the White1 House the US Capitol and the 50 state capitols across the na tion day in and day out truly express the will of rank and file American citizens Just how representative of the nations voters is the mail that comes in in a mere filling many mailpouches Results of the latest survey with adult citizens in all walks of life throw light on this all important matter SURVEY RESULTS first of all show that only 6in each 100 questioned say that they have written to one or more of the following during the past 12 months the President the gov ernor of their state one of their two U S senators or the rep resentative from their own dis trict Furthermore in every single segment of the population ex amined at least 6 out of every 7 in that population group say they have not written These groups include men and women young and eld and people in the various political groups city sizes educational groups occu pations and labor union mem bers At the same time analysis of todays survey results highlight some findings that all govern ment officials should know about their incoming mail One is that the more educa tion people have had the more likely they are to write For example 14 per cent of the college educated adult citi zens talked to 4 per cent of all those who have attended high school but not college arid only one per cent of those who fin ished their format schooling without attending high school written to someone in high oTfice over the past year False bomb report Wisecracks bring five arrests COLUMBUS Ohio your Up That wartime security slo gan looks more and more like good advice to airline travel ers who get an impulse to crack a joke about a bomb The FBIs arrest here Wed nesday night of Julius Rou dolph Radwanski 38 Hunting don Valley Pa on a false bomb report charge was the fifth such arresl in eight days Radwanski allegedly replied to a your bag is heavy com ment by a Trans World Air lines employe at Port Colum bus Airport with the remark Theres a bomb in it Then he found himself in FBI cus tody By shortly after mid night he had been brought be fore US Commissioner Rob ert W Newlon for a hearing Radwanski was released on bond reported E D Mason FBI special agent sta tioned at Cincinnati who re lated the incident Radwanski a sales engineer for a Phila delphia construction firm is to appcir in US District Court next Wednesday TWA flight 300 from Colum bus to Pittsburgh was delayed 32 minutes while officials scorched for the bomb None was found Earlier Wednesday in San Francisco a neon tube bender was charged with the same of fense The US attorneys of fice filed the charge against William A Grant of Uelmont Calif A United Air Lines spokes man said Grunt was trying to take out insurance on his wife after seeing her aboard a Los Angclcsbound DCS jet when lie made his remark Told Mrs Grant would have to sign any insurance forms Grant al legedly said Well I guess the bomb wont do any good then Mrs Grant was removed from the plane and her bag gage searched The airliner left 40 minutes late A false bomb report carries a maximum penally of a fine and or one year in prison Ami the U S Department of Justice has said it will vigor ously prosecute such cases svith U S attorneys request ing jail sentences for persons convicted Other arrests in recent days were made at Tulsa Okla Sarasota Fla aand Indiana polis Ind All involved trav eling business executives alleged to have made remarks about a bomb New drug probe WHERE THE NOSE GOES Come dian Jimmy Durante has the advantage Schnozz was a guest at an Easter egg as he joins Eve Gardner 5 Bethpage coloring contest for underprivileged L I in an impromptu contest of push ing eggs with their noses The youngsters at the St Moritz Hotel in New York More pressure on Nixon to campaign WASHINGTON presi sure built up on Vice Presi dent Richard MNixon Thurs day to open up with political campaigning before the Repub lican presidential and nominat ing convention Sen Barry Goldwater of Ari zona chairman of the Republi N ews in a utshell ANOTHER WAY of looking at QUR the findings is this College edu cated people in the nation pro portionately are writing 14 times as many letters to top govern ment officials as are those who ended their formal schooling in grammer school And these same college educated people are writing exactly 3Vi times as often as those who attended high schoftl but did not go to college Still another finding worthy of mention is that whereas 1 out of every 9 11 per cent of the independents have written to someone high up in government over the past year only 1 in 20 Republicans 5 per cent and 1 in 25 Democrats 4 per cent have written Worthy of particular note too is that people engaged in the so called whitecollar occupations are more inclined to write than are those in bluecollar occupa tions For example whereas 11 per cent of the professional worker group 8 per cent of the businessmanmanager group and 3 per cent of the salesclerical worker group wrote letters over the past 12 months only 4 er cent of the skilled craftsmen group and only 2 per cent of the semiskilled and unskilled group the biggest single seg ment of the voting population wrote AT THE SAME time 5 per cent of the farmers questioned say they wrote letters during the past 12 months to President Eisenhower their governor one or both of their U S senators or the representative from their own district Two other findings worthy of mention are that differences be tween men and women or be tween younger and older citi zens insofar as writing to gov ernment officials is concerned are very slight Exactly 6 per cent of the men and 6 per cent of ihe wom en talked to say they wrote to one of the people on the list during the past 12 months And survey findings show that 5 per cent of the 2129 year olds 6 fer cent of the 3044 year old and 6 per cent of the 45 year and old er group wrote Interesting too people living In big with 100000 or more less in clined to write to top govern ment officials than are those in smaller communities HAMILTON U S Coast Guard reported Thursday that five crewmen of a twinengine Canadian pa trol plane which was forced to ditch in the Atlantic off Ber muda have been rescued A German freighter took the men aboard au thorities have charged Bever ly unopposed in the GOP presidential primary Nixon col ected 725000 votes with nearly 00 precincts unreported This approached but still fell below he 781710 President Eisenhow er got in the 1956 primary POSSIBLY MORE significant lowever the vice president fell more than 150000 votes short of he total rolled up by Sen Paul Douglas a Democratic liberal who was unopposed for renomi nation to the Senate Goldwater said this outcome could be discounted somewhat another look at his determina tion not to campaign until after the convention Goldwater said Nixons lieutenants do n o noon agree with this assessment of course They have plenty of recedent for their view that ow a candidate runs in an un pposed primary has little to o with his final showing in ovember Nevertheless they could be isturbed by the failure of near 100000 Republicans who oted in the Illinois GOP gov rnors race to take the trouble o cast a ballot for Nixon even hough he was unopposed IN DENVER Post which upporled Eisenhower
