Hours of Labor ALBANY III April 12 ter 20 hours of incessant labor the Mederdocia dike south of here was so strengthened last night that it was felt that danger of its giving away under the pressure of high water is now past Thousands of sand bags were used yesterday to fill the two breaks which developed in the earthen embanitment and all seap age had ceased this morning A crew was busy today strength ening the levee wherever it was thot necessary and several loads ot piling will be driven in front of the dike BELMOND GIRLS TO COMPETE AT IOWA CITY Estherville Man Is Killed in Illinois ESTHERVILLE April bas been received here of the death of Clarence Barlow of Estherville in a train accident between Lockport HI arid Joliet 111 Tuesday night His brother Arthur Barlow left Thursday morning on learning1 of the accident to bring the body to Esthervtlle He is expected here Sat urday or Sunday Details of the accident have not been learned here except that Mr Barlow was killed instantly lie was proprietor of a battery station in Estherville until about six weeks ago when he left to seek employ ment after closing out his battery station He had lived nearly all his life here Besides his parents he is sur vived by two brothers and three sisters BELMOND April is the Belmond girls glee club which won the district music contest held at Belmoud April 5 and 6 This club will make the trip to Iowa City to com pete in ths state contest finals on May 3 to 5 It is under the direction of Miss Elizabeth Waugh Bel roond high school music instructor The members of the club are as Sullivan Sullivan 67 and reputed to be one of GaJcsburgs wealthiest men avera that he was forced to sign a note for in Miss Carrs fa vor when he was trapped according to fie affidavit in her home by an uncle David Farrell The affidavit states that Sullivan was summoned to Miss Carrs homo Sept 8 1927 for a political confer ence that her uncle appeared brandishing a knife and that the uncle demanded that Sullivan sign the note on the grounds that ha Lad compromised Misa Carr Sullivan avers he paid on the note before Farrell told him he had been mistaken in the affair and dad destroyed the paper Last Jan uary however a judgment 06 524500 was entered on the note without his beingserved In the suit Sullivan said Miss Carr who was justice of the peace at Galesburg from 1925 to 1928 has denied thru counsel the charge stating that the note jiven by Sullivan in payment for ler resignation from office for po itical reasons Judge Brothers yesterday granted Sullivan a 10day stay of
