E S Selby issued Wednesday and other plans completed by the special committee on the project indica tions are that Mason Citys cleanup and fire prevention week April 14 20 will be the outstanding event of this character ever held in this com munity While the entire week will be tak I en up with a program of cleanup and paiutup attention will be fo i cused on the fire prevention fea tures on Wednesday and Thursday April 17 and 18 when 60 fire pre vention experts will make a survey of all business institutions and pub lic buildings Vernor and Rogers Coming In this connection there will be brot to Mason City two nationally known figures in fire prevention work Richard E Vernor manager of the fire prevention department of the Western Actuarial bureau at Chicago and a recognized speaker on the subject and Harry K Rogers known thruout America as the fire clown Both Mr Vernor and Mr Rogers will appear in the schools of the city thruout the two days Mr Vernor will be the speaker at the joint Ki wanis and Chamber of Commerce luncheon Thursday noon and will address a free public meeting at the high school auditorium Thursday evening At this meeting the Mason City high school band which is now reaching a high state of perfection in preparation for the state music contest at Des Molnes will give a 45 minute concert Scouts to Take Part As usual the Boy Scouts of the city yrill play a prominent part in the entire prouram of the They Will distribute special placarus concerningthe puvpose of the week check up the places who fail to ob serve the occasion and aid in the general fire prevention survey In this connection it is interest ing to note that this same week wilt be observed thruTJUt the state Dr Henry J Albert state health commissioner has asked all cities towns and individuals to designate the week starting April 14 as cleanup week He suggested that municipal ficials luncheon clubs PROCLAMATION Asking Cooperation of Mason City Citizens in a General Cleanup Paintup and Fire Prevention Week April 14 to 20 To The People of Mason City Beginning Monday April 14 and continuing thruout thc week will be cleanup paintup and fire prevention week Plans are being per fected whereby a thoro campaign will be inaugurated thruout the city culminating in a fire prevention survey in which 60 underwriting ex perts will be in charge There also will appear in Mason City nationally known experts in the great fight to prevent fire who will appear in the schools and inpublic meetings Special request is made to the public to attend a mass meeting at the high school auditorium Thursday evening April 18 at oclock A thoro cleanup will result in many advantages to community life such as Safeguarding health Promotion of thrift Furthering fire prevention Stimulating civic pride and in making thc homes and the city beautiful The Boy Scouts of America as usual will take a prominent part in the campaign together with the street fire and police departments In this worthy movement to prevent the destructive work of fires of cleaning painting planting repairing and general rehabilitation and beautification we urge each citizen to do his or her best to make our Classes A session of the Tuesday night class in FirstAid was held at the Red Cross office in its new location in the M B A building Tuesday night when thc class was addressed for hours by Dr J B Marek as a climax to its ten weeks of practical instruction in FirstAid under the Red Cross chapter The locfeI andwill be given its final examination on nextTuesday evening Doctor Marek spoke of the neces sity of knowing exactly what to do and what not to do by those who are at the place where accidents oc cur He emphasized the importance of accurate training for every adult so that the entire situation might be properly understood by those who take hcarge Sorlien Speaks on Experiences as Iowa Assembly Member Oscar Sorlien at the monthly meeting of the Lutheran Brother hood of the Central Lutheran church Tuesday evening spoke of his experience as a member of the Iowa house of representatives His talk included the tracing bf the course of a bill from the time it is introduced until it directors of the Mason City Retail Merchants asso ciation at a meeting in the Cerro Gordo hotel Tuesday evening The speaker showed that the loss of interest on money is likely to eat up the profits if the payment a bill is delayed five or six months For instance it is estimated that Mason City has a total of 000 in charge accounts in a year The average paying time on this is four or five months Mr Sanders pointed out that if the time the ac counts run can be shortened two months it would amount to a sav ing of a year The speaker declared that it was a part of trend of the times in mer chandising to get bills paid up at every pay day This campaign has been started in Mason City and will be pushed by all retail merchants One of the chief activities of Mr Sanders work is organizing credit bureaus and to help them in func tioning efficiently Monday evening he helped organize a bureau at De corah A total of 110 merchants at tended the meeting Township Project Leaders Will Meet at Chamber Monday All of the township project lead ers and publicity chairmen of Cerro Gordo county are having an import ant meeting on Monday April 15 at the Chamber of Commerce rooms at 10 a m The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the state fair exhibit Out of the 100 counties in Iowa there will be 38 represented at the state fair in the home project work Cerro Gordo county having tiie pri vilege of being one of the 38 Each county is allotted premiums accord ing to their scoro averaging about per county Cerro Gordo county expects to make a good showing as every township is working hard
