Mason City Globe-Gazette (Newspaper) - April 9, 1960, Mason City, Iowa North Iowa Daily Newspaper Edited fwr the MASON CITY GLOBEGAZETTE VOL H The Newspaper That Makes All North lowans Neighbors iix United Prcw MASON CITY IOWA SATURDAY APRIL IttO I Copy Ttil Coniliti ef Two On HOME EDITION Me m South African premier wounded by assailan Baseball i season all I mixed up By RICHARD SPONG GlobeGazette Editorial Research Burtau WASHINGTON The major league baseball season opens on Tuesday with National League games in Los Angeles San Fran cisco Milwaukee and Cincin nati The traditional season opener in Washington DC now just the American League open ing game pits the Senators against the Boston Red Soxon Monday April 18 Whos on first runs the old burlesque routine and the ques tion is appropriate to this mixed up baseball season When President Eisenhower or his emissary throws out the first ball in the traditional sea sonopener in the Nations capi tal the season will be almost a week old An apartment house is going up where Ebbetts Field once housed those merryluna tics the Brooklyn Dodgers And the opening game in Los Ange les is scheduled to be played at night under lights Who blames the traditionalists for questioning whether any thing indeed is sacred THERES NO official explana tion why the 1960 American Leagues season starts six days later than the National Leagues The press reports only that obviously somebody goofed But the schedule disruption only serves to emphasize that the national baseball axis once firmly sited in the East has moved many leagues no pun intended westward Of the four cities in which games will be played in the senior circuit April 12 Angeles San Fran cisco no ma SOUTHERNERS NOT SO GLUM Even though they lost out in the Sen ates voting on the civil rights bill these Southern senators obviously dont feel too badly about the measure which was approved 7118 Shown after eight AP Photofax weeks of oratory are left to Lister Hill of Alabama strom Thur mond of South Carolina Harry Byrd of Virginia and John Stennis of Missis sippi Civil rights bill back in House WASHINGTON civil rights bill was back on the Houses doorstep Saturday after being passed by the Senate 71 18 House leaders of both parties are expected to urge the House to accept the changes made by jor league team decade ago The less than a shift of the the Senate in measure none the embattled of which sub Boston Braves to Milwaukee in 1953 was the first relocation of a major league franchise in half a century Since then the St Louis Browns have moved to Baltimore and become transmo grified into Orioles in the only countermovement to the west ward trend Calvin Griffith the gatewatching president of the Washington Senators threatens seasonally or more often to re dress the American League bal ance by ordering his young men to take Horace Greeleys advice IF YOU THINK as the club owners appear to only in terms of attendance baseball had a good season last year and the prospect is equally good for I960 Combined paid attendance in both leagues in 1959 was 19143 654 well short of the record of 20972601 set in 1948 but up al most 1700000 over 1958 The Los Angeles term still has a curious led both leagues in attendance last year as befits world cham pions They crammed 2070720 into Los Angeles Memorial Coli seum a monstrosity as a ball park but with an attractive ca pacity of 101528 seats Ground for the Dodgers million 55000seat stadium in hallowed Chavez Ravine was broken last Sept 17 but the promised greatest stadium in baseball wont be ready for this season The San Francisco Giants how ever are solidly ensconced in Candlestick Park IN THE MAJOR leagues only four teams played to fewer spec tators in 1959 than in cago St Louis and Philadel phia in the National League and Boston in the American None of these teams of course was in volved directly in franchise shifts Indeed St Louis Phila delphia and Boston are faltering at the turnstiles despite recent elimination of boxoffice com petition Otherwise even hapless Wash ington did well for Washington with 615372 a gain of about 140000 over 1958 evidently palled in by the Nats awesome foursome of homerun hitters Sievers Killebrew Allison and Lemon stantially altered its basic pro visions This would speed final action by avoiding the neces sity of having to set up a Sen ateHouse Conference Commit tee to compromise the differ ences BUT EVEN if the House does concur in the Senate amend ments the outlook is that this will not be done until some time after Easter In all probability the measure will have to run the gauntlet of the House Rules Committee headed by Rep Howard Smith a longtime foe of cLvil rights measures Passage of the bill by Senate Friday night climaxes battle that began Feb 15 and included more than a week of sessions around the clock THE HOUSE had passed its bill 311109 on March 24 The measure embodies most but not all of President Eisen
